As some of you may know ... we have been looking at property in LA and it has come down to a couple of properties and I was wondering what you all would choose and why.
We are in the final fact gathering stage ... there may be something come to light yet that will make the decision easier ... it is a tough call right now! But I "think" I know MY choice!

WOW, 7 kids is a houseful! My Chihuahuas are my kids and they fit just about anywhere, lol
I am torn because the thought of being on larger acreage with no neighbors in sight is kind of fun ... yet it is a bit remote even for me. I know my friend likes the idea of being able to shoot his gun and fish, which of course doesn't appeal to me ... in addition, the water tends to attract more snakes and that is NOT a plus for me! EEK!!!
I have always wanted to have a "hobby farm" and have goats, fancy chickens, mini horses (so cute!) ... and I think there I'd want geese - don't they kill snakes?
On the other hand, the house is very nondescript (around 2000 SF so not tiny but just so average), while the house on smaller acreage is about twice that size and so very picturesque and beautiful with a long driveway lined with big old trees. (I think they are talking about giving around 50 acres with the house which is still a nice piece of land but about 1/2 the acreage of the other and on a more major thoroughfare the sight of which is blocked by the trees and the house is set way back - but still the street is there, with its traffic and some small busineses scattered about the area as it is just outside of town.)
I am trying to not get my hopes up about either one as we had a deal on another property that fell through because we found out some stuff about it during due diligence that we did not want to deal with.
I guess in the end I could make even the plain house cute and country! That still leaves the snakes to contend with tho! YUCK!

With my 5 kids I would take the smaller house with more land! That is my dream! Living in the country and no neighbors no car sounds. cant afford it now though. I would love to give my kids that kind of house while they were growing up.

Oh yes, the snakes would be a downfall for me too. I can handle one every once in a while if they're not poisonous, but I couldn't handle seeing a lot of them or all the time.

My home is situated on 1 1/2 acre that's enough for me since I don't always have time to do yard maintenance. I have thought about getting one with more land so the young'uns can have more animals. Horses would be nice and now they're asking for a dog. Does anyone know anything about mastiffs and small kids? Let me know in another thread. Ultimately Ratlady it's up to you. But if you can handle all those animals the acreage would do better. As for the snakes, your dogs might even keep them away. I've heard of dogs fighting off snakes.

I'd go for the larger home on the smaller acreage. Sounds great. I've lived in the remote countryside and didn't like it after a while, too much to deal with.
You're going to love the house, I can tell by the way you are talking...go for it!!LOL

GSP's make EXCELLENT family dogs!!!
They do don't they. I'd have to ask the hubby, but he really had his heart set on an english mastiff. I was also thinking of the little girls, I wouldn't want anything hyper. Personally I wanted a pomeranian, but it'd probably be squashed by the boys' rough housing.

Julie, I've always wanted to live out in the country like that too ... I think if I had never seen the other nicer house I would have probably been quite content with the other - except for the snakes, cannot handle them, and LA is THE place for snakes I guess! I also used to love the idea of a river, lake, pond or stream on the property too but see there are no water moccasins/cottonmouths in the west so thinking about that in LA makes it very different ... I am truly terrified of water moccasins/cottonmouths and copperheads, not so much for me but for the little Chibabies. We do have rattlesnakes here in So. Cal. (our neighbor has killed 6 so far this season but we haven't see any - YET - thank GOD) but at least they rattle!! My biggest fear in AZ was scorpions cuz we had those really poisonous kind (bark) and I bought a brand new house out in undeveloped desert area but thank GOD never saw a SINGLE scorpion and I put those glue traps all around under appliances and at the garage door opening to monitor insect activity and see if I had any scorpions but never a single one!
But seriously, what is up with snakes like copperheads, cottonmouths/water moccasins that there is no rattle, no warning, they just strike? These seems wrong to me! Makes me sick to think about one of them getting a hold of one of my little furbabies.

LOL! I can handle a little pom. But the hubby already said no froo-froo dogs. He wants a mastiff or a pit bull. I said no to a pit bull. But I will ask him what he thinks of a GSP when he gets home. No promises though because he really has his heart set on a mastiff.
This is my first time getting a dog since I married him. He's always dreamed of a mastiff.

Oh snakes terrify me if they aren't garter snakes, I don't know one kind from another.

That's what I think too ... a bit of isolation is fine but after a while, I don't know ... I think of things like how far to the nearest vet, church (of my beliefs), things like burger king - not to mention olive garden and trader joe's! LOL, don't even know if they have those in Louisiana, probably not. And I HATE crawfish and such! YUCK! Swamp Bugs they call 'em there ... well BUGS is the second word and that's what they look like!
I reeeeeeally would not EVER pick LA if it was up to me, but it's not. The deep south just really isn't my cup o' tea - muggy, hot, snakes and bugs - need I say more?!?. (But the one house MIGHT make up for it!) Now, we all went up and visited my sister when she graduated from med school and lived in a darling little town called Winterville, North Carolina - THAT was exactly my style! Church on every corner, small town atmosphere but big enough for all the conveniences, friendly people, loved it! But my partner has a business that I help him with and he wants to open a second operation and for business reasons would be best in LA, so.... there 'ya have it.
The house IS beautiful but VERY old and that can either be a dream or a nightmare ... there is a whole lot of due diligence to do on a home that old and the last ancestor who owns it (has been passed down for generations) has dementia and can't give us any information about it and the (third) wife who is selling doesn't really seem to know anything about it, it's history, etc., which is making it more difficult (too bad as I bet that man has some neat stories about the old place locked away in his mind!) - but IF it is structurally sound and the electrical and plumbing isn't too old it might be okay. That's why I'm trying to not get my hopes up too much about it ... might have it inspected only to find it's full of rot or something. I think we a are both afraid a real old home might be a money pit. Ever see that movie with Tom Hanks & Shelly Long? It was a funny movie, but not if it is your own house! lol.

Of course you are right Baller ... that really should be enough! And either home is actually nicer than where I live now and on more acreage (we are on 9 acres right now) so I'm sure I could be happy either place.
But oh those big magnolia trees ... and sitting on the balcony sipping sweetened tea on a lazy LA afternoon/evening ... the smell of blossoms in the air ... how nice that would be!

That's it, they absolutely make me sick with fear ... and I don't want to get close enough to see if it's poisonous or not! I would just run in the other direction as fast as I could screaming my fool head off!!! lolol, did that the other day 'cuz a mouse ran up the wall of the barn! hehe poor girl who works here was sitting at the computer about a foot from me and I about made her pee her pants ... and that was just a barn mouse! lol
