oh wow that is beautiful - looks like a postcard!
I'd love to live where there are actually seasons like fall and winter ... in LA I think the four seasons are hot, muggy, windy and rainy!

I'm pretty sure the dogs are going to love it.Once the runs are up a we fence off a big area for them. I will love being out of the city.

Whoa..I love that dog...but it's way bigger than me! He/She is gorgeous... quote: Originally posted by Baller: LOL.. The dog on Turner and Hooch was called a "Dogue De Bordeaux".. They are so darn cute!! A friend of mine has one and it's huge!! The breed really does have an awesome temperament and they don't slobber that much.. At least my friends doesn't anyway... quote: Originally posted by Ratlady: quote: Originally posted by Eva: quote: Originally posted by CJK: If you don't want anything hyper, then totally steer clear of a Pom....LOL
LOL! I can handle a little pom. But the hubby already said no froo-froo dogs. He wants a mastiff or a pit bull. I said no to a pit bull. But I will ask him what he thinks of a GSP when he gets home. No promises though because he really has his heart set on a mastiff. This is my first time getting a dog since I married him. He's always dreamed of a mastiff.
Mastiffs are neat dogs ... but sooooooooooo slobbery! Remember that Tom Hanks movie (Turner & Hooch) where he had that dog that drooled all over in his shoes? Ewwwwww YUCKY!
I think my favorite big doggy personality-wise would have to be a Newfie - giant couch potatoes (lol, like me!). EXTREMELY mellow! But I don't think they would do well in hot weather states ...
My friend has his heart set on a Rhodesian Ridgeback ... personally that is not a dog that would even be on my list (which would include Rottie, Staffordshire, Dobie) ... but then again, he doesn't like my Chihuahuas (personally I admire a man who's not afraid to get in touch with his little dog side! lol), so to each his (or her) own I guess!
GSPs are hyper aren't they Julie? I would think any hunting dog (at least from strong working lines) would be. ??
Anybody ever been around Great Pyrenese? If we do end up having goats (likely pygmy or dwarf) I was reading on several of the goat sites that they (GPs) are wonderful at guarding them and an invaluable tool for raising up goat herds without them getting picked off by coyotes!

Regardless or our disagreements..that is a beautiful house, I must say that and good luck with getting all things done. Is this home in Louisiana?? quote: Originally posted by Ratlady: Forgot to let you guys know ... we have a deal on the house and are now into the due diligence phase, getting inspections done, etc. There are still a lot of ways the deal can fall through such as the inspectors finding something we can't live with.
It is less acreage than we originally wanted to get but one does not really NEED 100 acres I guess. That kind of land is just too darned expensive these days!

Thanks, Jo, it is a rather neat old place. There is quite a bit of work to do on the grounds that we know will take some time and effort but we are hoping the house itself is structurally sound, as problems like that are just too expensive to get into. Yes it is in Louisiana ... I was shocked to see how much prices of real estate have gone up in that state since Katrina. Anything that wasn't under water immediately doubled or even tripled in value. Now they are finding pockets of oil all over the state which has made prices jump even further and no one is letting go of mineral rights but are still charging an arm and a leg for anything with large acreage. Crazy ... California real estate has gone waaaaaaay down, Louisiana has gone waaaaaaaay up ... backwards from the way I thought it would be before we started looking. I don't like California AT ALL - much too liberal a state for my liking -- but even tho Louisiana would not be one of my choices either I figured at least it would be CHEAP but not anymore! Well, at least California was smart enough to not allow Loser Levine's AB1634 to pass this run at it, tho it makes me sick that some cities not just in CA but other states like Florida HAVE been duped into believing the PETA/HSUS hype and went mandatory spay/neuter!! I just cannot believe how twisted the thinking is of those sick and demented people. Oh well, on to more pleasant thoughts ... thoughts of sipping mint julep on that balcony under the magnolia tree ...

That's my kinda house!! balconies, luv em'.. The grounds are lovely..great curb appeal.. That's interesting about the oil in Louisiana, didn't know that. Prices in Cali, were terribly expensive when I was looking. Some bare land in the surrounding Santa Barbara area was dirt cheap, but you couldn't build..couldn't get water, so what's the point!!Ocean at the front door, but no underground shelves of drinkable water. Would be nice if you ended up with mineral rights...huuuuuh! I'm thinking of a move to the USA, Canada has become ridiculous in price, although I do own a home, I'm so sick and tired of all the dog laws too...here it's Animal Activists on LSD..they see a dog in a backyard and get it into their heads it's not the perfect setting and they will sneak up burrow under the fence and steal it. I had a friend who's dog loved sitting under an old Oak tree, the dog was 14 years old, but they Animal Activists thought the dog looked sick and couldn't move..he was just relaxing under his favourite tree the stupid fools...anyway they stole him. Idiots.. quote: Originally posted by Ratlady: Thanks, Jo, it is a rather neat old place. The USA Has Enough PuppyMill Breeder's Of Dachsunds Josephine. Beside's, There Is That Little Matter Of Your Arrest Record, That Will Seriously Dampen Any Plan's You Have Of Moving Stateside. You Have Nothing To Offer The USA That It Does Not Already Have, Although Seeing Your Name On The USDA Reports Of Commercial Breeders Would Be A Joy. ROFLMAO !@!

Poor, poor Truthy, just can't get anything correct. Comprehension problems?? The issue was dismissed and I can cross into and live in the US of A whenever I want. Question is, can you? Again, my rendition of OH Canada! Just for you...Ah heck, why bother, you know the words as you're a Canadian! Keep trying, you may, and I say that with enormous doubt, find something out about me, even anger me!! Don't give up, Aye! Newfie! People are just SICK to steal another's dogs that's like stealing someone's CHILDREN! Poor old guy just wanted to enjoy his final days under his favorite tree! Old dogs just look well old and so no they aren't gonna look as much the picture of health as a young vibrant dog but no reason to steal them! grrrrr Yeah, I can't wait to sip sweetened ice tea on that balcony! Oops, there I go getting my hopes up ... bad Ratlady! lol P.S. Since getting so sick I've thought the medical care would be great in Canada as the doctor wants to perform several surgeries and I flat out don't have the money so we just keep doing the meds and injections which really are very temporary at best. He wants to sever a couple of the nerves in the spine that are the worst damaged and then he wants to implant some device that bypasses pain impulses to the brain at the touch of a button but again REALLY expensive so it's not happening. Yep, I definitely need to start buying lotto tickets! quote: Originally posted by Josephine: That's my kinda house!! balconies, luv em'.. The grounds are lovely..great curb appeal..
