My first pony was named Beauty. She was the cutest little pony in the world. She was fat, she was patient with me, she was a sweet pony. I rode the fire out of her trying to keep up with my bigger sister on her pony that was much bigger than beauty, lol,me and my sister stayed in the big pasture all day ridning up and down the fence line playing every game we could think of on horseback. The best time of my life has always been in a pasture somewhere riding with my sister. We had the best childhood ever, and some of the best ponies and horses in the world! I owe alot of my love of horses to Beauty!!
That is a very nice story, Kinzel. What great loving memories you have. All of my favorite memories are also with my horses past and present, and of course a couple of dogs thrown into the mix as well.
My first was an OLD quarter mare bought from a trader as a 7 yr old. (we knew NOTHING about horses but she RODE and HANDLED for us kids so well) My dad bought her for us and she was the BEST horse. I rode her everywhere everyday. But every winter she would get so skinny because she had the heaves so bad and when we fed her hay it caused her to not breath well. We would wet it down but she wouldn't eat it. We fed her alfalfa cubes no go...Finally some one told us to feed her bread with her grain and THAT worked pretty well. If only we knew then what we know now we would of realised she had the heaves. But I am so glad she as my horse!! We had her only 6 yrs until the vet told us our (she should have been 13) was too old to go on any longer and her lungs were so full of lfuid she could not breathe. It was awful.....you could poke her sides and the indention would stay. That was the hardest thing to go thru but I still am glad she was my first horse!!!
It's a dog eat dog world, and I am wearing milkbone underwear!...unknown.

Each one I've had was special for their own reasons. Just like my dogs and cats are special - each has their own story. It would take a book to tell them all.

My first pony was Tommy, a sucessful halter stud who became a gelding and my 7th birthday present. I was his crash test dummy long before he was mine. I also had shown him long before he was mine. Every Saturday to a show. I vividly remember my first halter class at 6 years of age. I was instructed to follow the girl in front of me. I did, but that little SOB, he reared, he balked, he ducked in, he was so naughty, we got 4th out of 10! Those were the days! I'm sure he's passed on, when I was 12 he was given to another girl who was younger and wanted a pony so bad. I already had my QH, so it wasn't like I was horseless, but I was pretty pissed at the adults in my life who made that decision. I hope she loved him as much as I still do.
My first pony was a darling gray dapple named dolly. She waS so sweet.
I know what you mean Kinz about growing up wtih horses. It made life very interesting and fun. Life was not always so fun, but growing up with the horses made up for it. There was nothing like summertime when school let out and just getting up early and going for a ride. I did that as early as the age of 7. In our PC world today I wonder if parents would let kids go out alone and ride a pony or a horse! I was a rough and tumble kid and spent my summers on a horse or at the pond fishing! We moved to the country when I was about six, before that lived in DC. it was a big change, then we moved back to DC when i was ten and back again when i was a teenager. So i feel very well rounded in haVing grew up in a big city and the country.

My first horse was pony-sized (13.3), but he was definitly an Appaloosa horse, not a POA. My parents did everything wrong, bought me a yearling as my first horse, let me break him by myself, kept him in a barb wire fence, etc. Sham and I learned together and stayed together until he died of colic at 23. He was the first horse my son rode at age 11mos. He was gentle with everything on the ground, loved to play with the dogs and let any child ride him. He could not abide adult men and bucked off or rolled on every one who tried to ride him.

Although Sham was my first horse of my own, I can remember riding Grandpa's work horses when I was 2-3yrs old. Still have a bite scar on my back from when I got between 2 mares in the hay bin.
