What are your feelings on this disease?
How do you feel it has effected the horse world and have you ever seen a horse suffer from this disease?

How well informed are you of this disease? Any thoughts that you can share?

I feel man MADE the disease, and can rectify the situation! But unfortunately as with anything else, MONEY talks Frown!AQHA is making a half-hearted attempt, one to pacify the non-impressive people but not p*ss of the Impressive people(who are big $$ to the Association)! Too little too late, as i've already said! But it IS unfair to down ALL Impressive stock! It IS possible to get the look and NOT the disease, with careful breeding and outcrossing!!

Hyperkalemic periodic paralysis is an inherited disease that leads to uncontrollable muscle twitching or profound muscle weakness and in severe cases may lead to death.
It is a genetic defect in AQHA's rules.
It has only been detected in Impressive descendants.

Most horse people are totally for it or totally against it, depends on how much they know about it as to where they stand on the issue.

It popped up in a horse named impressive , the only known reason that they have been able to come up with is it was because Impressive was overly inbred.
No other horse carries this disease but descendants of Impressive.
It is a muscle disease, the more affected a horse is by it , the bigger the muscles the horse has, which has made this line of horses a huge demand in halter classes where horses are judged on looks and conformation.

Your welcome

Yes he was used alot as a stud, he was the closest thing to perfect as any QH had ever been.
No he is dead, I think he died in the 70's.

They are unable to know if HYPP was passed along to impressive from any of his ancestors becuase by the time they started testing and found this disease all of his ancestors were dead, but they have lines from those same ancestors that do not have this disease, so it is MHO that it is because of the inbreeding with Impressive offspring that has caused the disease to pop up.

The first foaling year with an HYPP positive horse was 1977.
I am not sure when the testing actually began. Impressive's offspring had also been inbred to so this disease could have been strengthened even more by doing that.
There was no such thing as HYPP before Impressive, so no one had a clue to test for this for years, it took many many horses getting sick with this before the flags were raised and they could trace the problem to impressive.

Deep, I have recently purchased a double bred granddaughter of Impressive. Her test results have not come back.BUT so far no signs! Our aunts horse has it and at times is debilitated!

No I have no descendants from Impressive at all. I always check the bloodlines of horses before i buy them, and that is usually the first question I ask when inquiring about a horse.
My aunt has a stud, he has HYPP, it is one of the most horrible things i have ever seen, so much suffering.

Now someone can have a Doc Bar horse with Impressive in the lines, they do cross Impressive horses with foundation horses, the most common cross is with Skipper W bred horses.
Skipper W was one of the greatest foundation studs, I think he was awesome!

www.bringinglighttohypp.org site is having some problems right now.. but its very informative. I would type what I know about Impressive and HYPP but its late and I have to get up early.
I will tell you that its a genetic fluke that is very dominate, meaning it does not dilute with future generations. Yes Impressive was heavily linebred but so were so many other prominant horses in AQHA history. The Poco Bueno line is the only other one to have a genetic (this one is reccessive though) disease come about nicknamed HERDA. Its covered on this site as well as OLWS and they are hoping to add more later.

No problem Dane. Wink As slow as AQHA is moving to correct this problem I am about to get out of QH and Paint (APHA has done NOTHING yet) and going with my next love, the Andalusians and Lusitanos, beautiful athletic horses love i admit that standing still they are only a horse but in motion.. WOW. If I were only RICH!
