Ok eagle,if you're a trainer, you'd realize that gates are held closed by strong magnets. The horse can open them if they hit it hard enough, it's better they can break through than getting hurt or hurting jockeys confined in a tiny metal stall. The gate did NOT pop open, the horse opened it. Watch the replay and see how hard he hit it opening it to go out.
As far as the leg, there should be a press conference televised on TVG at 5 pm eastern time. I do believe the ESPN people are there too. The leg was broken above and below the ankle, there was a condylar fracture of the cannon bone, the ankle itself is dislocated, and below the ankle in the long pastern it's broken as well and the sesmoid is chipped. Below the ankle it's bad, there's many pieces and that's much harder to fix than just a clean break.
The main thing is coming out of anethesia, as long as he doesn't reinjure what the vets peiced together. He should be waking up in a pool though, as that way he cannot hit or put pressure on the injury. I wish them well.

I know BRD. Just wondering what you thought. Doesn't happen often you know.
At least he was taken to New Bolten - if he was mine, that's where I'd want him to be. The recouperation will be the hard part - it will show the depth of his 'heart' - IMHO - he showed lame after the Derby, but I couldn't see enough of him to pick which leg - nothing was ever said about it - I wonder if that wasn't why he was given such long lay-offs. He also knuckled over on it a couple of time before the Preakness. I personally thought he looked a little too keyed up. My prayers are with him.
