Hello, I have a question about parvo, if anyone knows about it. I know someone who had a relative bring them a puppy. She had it for a few weeks and it got really sick and when she took it to the vet he said it had parvo. After a lot of trying the puppy still died and now the vet said the only way she can get a dog is to wait a few months and get an adult who has had all it's shots. My question, is there any way a new dog (even an adult) can get this desease if it has had it's shots? I had someone else tell me to tell her not to get a dog for a year now or it could die, with shots or not, doesn't matter.
Two more questions, I met her new puppy right after she got it. Do I have to wait to get a dog now? And did it come with parvo or get parvo after she had it?
They told her when they brought it that it had it's first shots. I guess they were not telling her the truth.

Deep - You know how I feel on this one. In this area we have entirely too many vets calling everything 'Parvo'. I would want to see the lab results before accepting that diagnosis. If it was PArvo, then you are 100% correct - though I'm not sure about how long it stays in the ground. What I find here is that most cases of 'Parvo' are really hook worm infestation - which of course does NOT respond to the treatment for Parvo. On the down side I think hook worms can live in the ground even longer than the virus can. One the plus side it is very treatable. JMHO

Thanks so much. Not really what I was hoping to hear, but I am glad I know now...
Does that mean getting a dog would be OK if it had the titer? Do all vets do the titer? I never wear my shoes past the door so if I scrubbed them in bleach or something would that fix it for me atleast?
I was looking at a dog at an online shelter, should I just forget about him or ask the shelter about it? He is an adult with all his shots.
My mom went with me to my friends house and took her dog with her. She called her groomer to see if she should reschedule her grooming apt. and she thanked her for calling and said pushing the appt. back to 4/7 was all they needed to do. Can her dog (who isn't showing any signs of this problem and who has his shots) carry the parvo for 2 years? Will she take the parvo to the groomers on her shoes?

An adult dog who has had all his shots is probably immune from Parvo - that would be both sets. A titre would be helpful and most vets can do them if asked. I don't know if bleach affects Parvo - I use a steam cleaner - but I will say this: EVERY case of what was supposed to be Parvo that I have seen in the past 5 or 6 years has really been hook worms which can cause the same symptoms and cause a 'crisis' if the animal is stressed. Your Mom's dog wouldn't carry it - except maybe on her paws for a while until it washed off - because the immunity in her system would kill it.

I don't know what tests the vet did, I will ask. I know he gave the puppy an IV and before he went any farther told her the puppy would most likely not live and that treatment would cost at least $350. but euthanizing would only cost $50. so if she wasn't sure she wanted it to go with the euth. He said it had pitt bull in it and that he didn't think she could handle the breed. But she had it for 2 weeks, loved it and it was a VERY sweet puppy, whatever it had in it, so she went ahead with treatment.

Thank you so much AmPugs! That is good news! I am going to go call my freind about the testing, it should be on her bill.

Well, she doesn't know what tests he did. It doesn't say anything about it on her bill. She is mad and thinks he was against her puppies breed mix. I don't totally disagree knowing the things he told her but I don't think he would have purposly allowed her puppy to die because of it.

Thanks. I contacted the shelter and talked to them. While they were very grateful that I left them know before I adopted, they won't let me adopt, for now. I could search elsewhere, but I'm in no hurry anyway. My freind is glad to hear that the vet was right about the adult dog thing being OK, but not up to a new one now, I guess. It's just amazing what kind of coas parvo can cause for everyone around. And how fast it can take a puppy, even a larger breed one. Thanks so much CardiGuard, deepcreek, and AmPugs!

Im sorry if I duplicate any information already received but I didnt take the time to read the responses...

Parvo lives in the ground for roughly 9 months. You can however kill it with a diluted mixture of bleach water (I think its a 15:1 ratio I used). I just sprayed it over my lawn and around the house in a spray bottle and I was fine. My cousins dog got it but my dog never did. I guess his first 2 shots didnt take, which is why we give 4 just in case. browman

When cleaning up your home area, make sure to get the bottoms of your shoes and wash your clothing that you wore when around the puppy.

I would still wait a few months before bringing in a new dog, especially a puppy just in case you missed anything.

I know this is an old thread but I don't get here often.

Vaccinate with NeoPar for parvo, the ONLY parvo shot for the most strains of parvo. Proven effective on more strains of parvo than any other shot.
