You would have to check with your local and state laws as they vary with exotic pets. Some places will require you to have a special permit, special caging and all that stuff. I do have to say I don't think keeping monkeys as pets is a good idea.
when I was a child we had a ring tale mokey . God that Monkey was a mess and she was jealous over my dad. You could not kiss or hug hom in front of her or she would get mean
The NATIVE people can probably keep them because the environment is what they need, and they probably dont keep them in air conditioned houses in cages without the correct mental and physical stimulation, nor the correct diet.
Glad you reconsidered. Any primate is VERY HARD to keep and are not "pets"...no wild animal is. I dont know many people who like animals that throw poop and pee and that masturbate and bite for pets.
Like you said, nice idea in theory, in reality best left to zoos and private collectors with the capability to DO IT RIGHT and give the animals a good life, normal lifespan and proper housing.
Please, please do tons and tons of research on owning a monkey. I have several friends who bought them as babies, but once they hit sexual maturity (around 18months) they are no longer that sweet baby. IMO monkeys do not make good pets and it's very unfair to them to try and keep them as one.
