Hello everyone. I have been looking everywhere for a gerbil or a hamster. I live in Edmonton Kentucky. Can anyone help me find one? Please. Thanx Amanda Anderson email me at babyblue4u18@hotmail.com
Would actually be better off finding a smaller pet store, or breeder of gerbils or hamsters. You tend to get them younger so they adjust to handling quicker. Most Hamsters I have seen purchased from Petsmart are older, biters and not used to handling.

I can tell you this actually VERY untrue. I work and a PETsMART in IN, and I promise its the same with all other petsmarts. We get hamsters in at a VERY younge age. By the time most are bought, they are still somewhere between 1 and 2 months old. About the biting; That's simply untrue as well, and you'd see that if you took the time to go in and look at one yourself. Honey Bear Hamsters and Black bear hamsters are BRED TO BE FRIENDLY. Most will allow you to wake them up and pick them up right away without a fuss. (Keep in mind they ARE nocturnal. How would you like to be waken up in the middle of the night to be held and petted?) I can tell you honestly that we sell hamsters and gerbils so quickly, and it very RARELY happens that we have one still up for sale that's over 3 to 3 1/2 months old. That's not old at all.--Note: Gerbils are not bred to really be played with. THey're in constant motion, and aren't really great for small children. A hamster would be the better choice there.

I am glad your Petsmart is that way. Perhaps I over spoke when I generalized. MY local Petsmart is this way. I have been to two other local Petsmart and found the same thing. I know because I am there least once every two weeks and next time I go Ill make sure to take a photo so you can see the Hamster's size that is carried there. The fact is they get them in groups and they do not sell out quickly. They are not merely 1-2 months, I know this because I bred Hamsters when I was younger. Teddy Bears to be specific, and they will bite if not handled frequently.

Something will be done?? What are they the mob? The most they could do is ask you to leave and have you removed if you didnt.
Yeah. That sounds over the top. They can do nothing but ask you to leave. If they did anymore than that, they end up looking guilty as hell like they have something to hide.
Glad you like your Petsmart Adrianne, but in my experience they sell mill bred gerbils, hamsters, etc just like every other large chain. Petsmart is one of the better ones for sure (Petland is a nightmare), but the small pets they sell are overbred in mill environments. Doesn't matter if they are sold very quickly. The genetics are already there and if there is a predisposition to biting or aggression, it will come out later on.
I hate to say this, but will anyway, i really wish that we would cease selling these small pets only because the MAJORITY of people who buy them are people getting them for their kids who usually don't take care of them. There are more people who neglect these poor creatures then don't.
