I was wondering if any of you have one of those underground electronic fences, and if they work. My Yorkshire terrier runs off everytime he's let outside to visit one of the other dogs on the block, and our yard isn't fenced in. He comes back, but I'm scared he's going to get hit by a car. I've been thinking of getting one of these electronic fences, but I don't want to get one if they don't even work.

my friend had one of those. they had a fence, but they kept the gate open for their cars. they put the boundary at the gate, and the dog tried to escape once. now, even if you call him, he won't come out. smart dog...
Be responsible, get your pets spayed or neutered! :-)

I have the underground invisible fence and it works. I have 6 dogs, all are trained to the fence. I would not get a cheat brand ( like a Wal-Mart brand ), i would only get it from the actually "Invisble Fence" place its self. It will cost alittle more, but its defently worth it. Good Luck
The invisible fences do a good job of keeping your dog within the boundries you have set. The problem is...they won't keep other dogs OUT. My friend used an invisible fence to confine her dog, but a dog from the neighborhood broke loose, came into her yard, attacked her 2 young children and her dog. Her dog was killed fighting to protect the kids. I think the smart money is invested in a fence or a large dog "play yard". The barrier method is more reliable for your dog's safety.
Thanks everyone for the info. Jude- we actually live in a small town where "everyone knows everything about everyone and their dog"-literally! So I know all the neighbors and their dogs. Hopefully something like that won't happen because I know it's still a possibility even knowing the neighborhood pets. Thanks again.

to gmspetproject, This friend of mine also lives in a VERY small midwestern farm town. She knew this neighbor very well, knew the dog too. Things happen...
I would like to add my .02¢ in about the "Invisible Fence" also. I have one but I do not use it anymore. I was never told the batteries to keep the collars in use were so expensive! You have to buy them every few months for each dog! The fence did work except my area is prone to power outages. One of my dogs would also run through the fence every time she saw a cat, the shock, no matter how strong, didn't seem to bother her. Finally, these fences are meant to be for your pet WITH supervision, you should never use the fence as a primary fence, i.e. as a "baby-sitter." I do rescue and these fences are not sanctioned by rescue groups. I had to go right behind and have another fence built. I have heard of some people who love these fences though so it's just a matter of your situation I guess.
