I'm looking for new ideas/suggestions on how to get my little rescued doggies adopted. This online thing hasn't worked out real well for me and with the summer heat, it's hard for us to sit outside with them. Can anyone offer me any advice, suggestions, ideas, etc. on this? I do use the Walmart bulletin board in town and I use the radio and the free newspaper shopper ads also.

Yes, I use Petfinders and I used about 20 other free ad sites and I got a lot of emails, but no one followed through. I wrote all kinds of different ads too. Maybe it's just the time of year?

DB, from what I have seen, Molly J is probably right I can't believe what I am seeing in our local papers - mixed breeds offered for prices like purebreeds!!!
Seriously, have you put up photos and flyers in the local vet offices. Our vets allow flyers and business cards. Also a lot of local resturants have bulletin boards for postings. Pictures catch a lot of attention. Put bows on them and make pics. Put up a cutesy little flyer. Sell the "total package". People are drawn to neat pretty little packages - cute dog with a bow and a little gift set of collar, leash, and some kibble in a baggie - or something similar. If you have a local Dollar Tree - everything there is a dollar - you could pick up a box of dog bones to divide into baggies, collars, leashes, etc. It would only take $2 to $3 per dog to "package" them.
Of course I know finding the perfect forever home is not that easy. But maybe the visual presentation will help find the perfect homes.
God bless you for what you do. I am thinking of getting into the rescue part. I talked with our local Yorkie rescue person yesterday. She has had some serious medical illness in her family and hopes to return to rescue within a few months. I would love to be involved in some way.
Dogbabi - Maybe you could get in good with some local private rescue groups. They could put photos of your dogs on there much more visited websites. On petfinders, are you a registered rescue group? Or do you just post in the classified section? You can get your own, free website if you sign up with them (all you need is your adoption contract and a written vet statment that you do rescue work). Plus, these rescue groups you "get in good with," can link your website from their web pages. Just some ideas
Hey, these are really good ideas. Thanks ya'll for posting them. I like that neat little package idea... You know I do give them that when they adopt (just for grins) and I never thought about advertising it. I found these cute scooby doo treat bags and I fill them up with goodies and I give the new owner a doggie bag with a bowl, dog food, dog toy, the treats, and a plastic up with water and a lid for the trip home. I guess if I mention that, it might entice them a bit more For Dragonfly: The breeds I have...well, lots of times they are mixed, but I do get some purebreds at times and even once in while, one that is registered. Right now I have a purebred black lab, 2 golden retrievers, a sharpei, 2 wolf/rottie mixes, 2 basset hounds, 1 schnauzer,a cockapoo,1 blue heeler pup and 3 red heeler pups,a dashschund, a spitz, a chi/doxie mix, a pek/doxie mix and I think that's about it for this week. Grin...Lots of babies that need good homes always. I try to save them all, ya know and sometimes I cry when they leave, but I know I can't keep them and they need more attention than I can give them.At least they are safe and taken care of with me until I can find them good homes. Thanks for asking.

A lot of rescue groups offer their rescue services (including hosting your ads) to mixes as well as purebreds. I would love to see that wolf/rottie mix! You don't happen to have pic do you? I'm so glad that you're doing this for these animals, they're just one less (or a few in your case) that will be killed in the shelter. You're a good person! My neighbor moved the other day and she was supposed to find a home for her kitty. She didn't want to spend the $50 bucks it costs to get her kitty neutered (only $35 at a vet here in town) and get his shots up to date for him to be in a foster home. I asked what she did with him and she said "Oh, I just threw him outside." I felt like smacking the living daylights out of her. I have a big bowl of food out for him (and a few other strays around here) so if I see a stray that will let me get close, I will take him in and stick him in the spare bedroom with a litter box, food and water. Then I will get him his shots, hopefully get him fixed, and find him a loving home (with an adoption fee of course, I learned never to give pets away for free). I haven't seen him yet...and I think I'm feeding more birds then cats LOL. The point is, to keep up the good work!

Those pups are soooo cute! I just want to cuddle one right up!
The wolves are beautiful. Usually, wolf mixes are hard to train and socialize, to put it plainly because of their wild tendencies. How are these guys? Get along with people and other dogs? They're absolutely gorgeous and if I were them, I would have eaten the goats too. LOL.

I advertised at Petfinders.com also put up pen ups at the vet offices in my area (trying to keep them small due to space available). The local papers did ok as long as I said to approved homes only and stated the adoption fee. The local animal shelter had my business cards and gave my hotline number to those that were inquiring about a Boxer for that is mostly what I handled. AND when things got tough I started adopting out of state but that is difficult if things go wrong. Unfortunately for now my program is on hold due to the future closing of my place of business so hopefully after I know where my employment is then I will be able to start back up. No Money to fund the program at this time...
Hi Dragonfly, thanks!! The wolf/rottie's get along well with other dogs and kids and grown ups. They are so sweet, I was worried at first, but they seem better than a lot of big dogs we've had before. They are awesome...the pic doesn't do them justice. The little white puppies are Baroque St. Germains and they are pure bred, and needless to say, they got adopted right away. We got the mama when she was expecting and were told that the Dad was the same breed, but the people didn't want to have to worry about puppies. A couple adopted the mama and one puppy together too, so it worked out rather nicely for that little family. Barbie: I think you're dogs are so neat looking. I'm sorry about the finances and I know how tough it can be. I'm having a hard time adopting right now too, but I think it's the time of year. I'm going to try everyone's ideas on here and see how it goes. It never hurts to try. People go thru spurts around here. A few weeks ago, everyone was looking for boxers. This week, it's chihuhuas, and next week, it will be something else. I think they only want what we don't have....grin..just kidding...but it does seem that way at times. I do hope you get your program up and running again. It's really great when you know you get a doggy a good home.

Hi Lace, near San Antonio, Texas. I would like to adopt the wolf/rotties out together if possible because they have been together since birth, according to the man I got them from.

Well, I guess it says San Antonio under my post doesn't it? oops!! Knippa, near Uvalde, Texas....that's about 75 miles or so west of San Antonio....no one ever heard of my little town, so I put down San Antonio since it's more familar to most people.

Another thing about Petfinders, if you get a referral from your vet you can get your own home page with petfinders. It doesn`t cost anything to you which is a big help to fellow rescue groups. I did not have a home page for I could only house about 5 at a time but if I get my program up and running again, I intend on getting a referral from my vet telling everything that is done in compliance with my program. Just thought i would mention it for it does help to get some exposure.

Thanks Barbie, I'll do that. I'm working on taking better pics of the rescues too. I do think the photography has a lot to do with it also. Gotta be a better photographer with my little models..grin...I appreciate your help and everyone else's here. Great ideas!!
For better pictures this is what I did. Have someone hold the dog on the leash, taking just a pic of the dog or sometimes if I was by myself I would clip the dogs leash to the fence so it would be still. Some would take photos without being held so i guess they were photogenic...
