Check out www.puppydogweb.com. They have breed profiles for all dogs recognized by the AKC. This tells you how big they get, health problems associated with the breed, how much excercise they require, etc. If you want a smaller dog think about getting an English or American Cocker spaniel. I have seen some English Cockers that were only about 15-20 pounds and they look like a mini springer spaniel.

I've never owned a Springer but I know that they require alot of excercise. IMO they wouldn't be the best dog for a small home or apartment.
Have you considered an English Cocker/ I think they are a little more laid back than the Springers. I would check with breeders and ask alot of questions.

good advice. why do some dogs require more exercise than others? My place is tiny. I doubt this is a good choice for me from your reply. I still love springers though. why are cockers better?

I'm not sure Cockers are "better" but from what I have seen the English Cockers are a little more laid back. American Cockers have been bred now for many years to be pets, so that may be something for you to look at to.
I think alot of Springers are still being bred to work, and working dogs need a job to do or they can go stir crazy so to speak. Brittany Spaniels are also still being bred to work by alot of breeders, from what i have seen they have alot of energy to.
I like the Springers looks to, they are very pretty dogs.

Each person has a type of breed they love (and dislike/hate). Different breeds were bred for specific purposes. Did you know that poodles were bred for hunting? Some dogs require less excercise than others. Don't believe it if someone tells you that a small dog does not need excercise because of their size. They still need just as much excercise, they just don't require as much space.

You also can't judge a dog solely by the breed. Each dog is different. A breed standard or profile will tell you about the type of dog, but that does not mean the pup you get will act according to that profile. Most dogs will be more happy sitting on the couch with you, than running around outside alone. And excercise does not necessarily mean you have to go for a 2 mile walk. A game of fetch or playing on the floor would make them happy too.

If you are worried about size, look for a smaller breed. I have seen some tiny English cocker spaniels and they are absolutely adorable. Or check around with as many breeders as you can to see what sizes they breed, they may have some smaller springers.

While some pups in a litter may be more laid back than others, as a working breed even the most laid back Springers will have more energy than a Chihuahua, Shihtzu, Peke, etc etc etc. Any breed can make a good housedog as long as they have an outlet for their energy. I would hate to see a bored Border Collie as a housedog, if given nothing to do they would make terrible housedogs. If you are willing to excercise and train then I say get a Springer.

hi there, I had a springer spaniel and he was pretty big at 86 pounds, but my aunt has one also which is only at most 45 pounds.I love them and they are the best dogs with awesome personalities, they do require excersize which I gave my springer but he was just a big dog. They do vary in all sizes but I have never seen one smaller then my aunts around 40 pounds, so if you want a smaller dog than that I would recommend a cocker spaniel.Good luck!! Smile

I RAISE ENLISH SPRINGER SPANIELS.THE STANDARD CALLS FOR A DOG BEING 45-50 LBS OR SO.YOU CAN HAVE A VARIATION ON SIZE.MANY OF THE FIELD BRED TYPE OF SPRINGER ARE SMALLER.I HAVE A FEMALE THAT IS ABOUT 35-38 LBS.THEY ARE QUITE ACTIVE BUT DO ENJOY THE COMPANIONSHIP OF A HUMAN.IF YOU HAVE A SMALL PLACE I SAY YOU COULD DO IT BUT YOU WOULD WANT TO GET THE PUP/DOG OUT FOR A ROMP AT LEAST TWICE A DAY.KEEP IN MIND THOUGH THAT SINCE THEY LIKE COMPANY MANY WILL BECOME BARKERS IF KEPT ALONE FOR LONG PERIODS(LIKE WHEN YOU ARE AT WORK).DON'T FORGET YOUR NEIGHBORS!
