Why do people lie about their pets? You wouldn't believe all the stories I hear and most of them are just not true. I ask why are you getting rid of this pet and they lie...why don't they just say it's unruly, I don't want it or it poops the floor or whatever the problem is. I actually had a lady tell me she didn't want her chihuhua because it killed it's mate. It did not!! I checked out her story and guess what, it's mate was alive and well. Some people beat up their dogs to near death...it's horrible, but it happens more often than you know and then they'll say, oh i don't know what happend to her, i woke up and she looked that way.....and it's an inside dog!! Guess this is another pet peeve of mine. (pun intended) Dogs are valueable and they are man's/woman's best friends. A dog will give you unconditional love and I have yet to meet a human who can match that. Please put your input here for me to read. Thank you!!
I conpletely agree. Why do people do this? They would rather think it is their pets that have done something wrong, and not them. If a pet isnt housetrained, is unruley, it is the owners fault. No one wants to admit they have done something wrong.
If your going to give up your pet you don't need to lie. When I had to give up my kitten to a shelter we didn't lie ( about 30 minutes later someone was taking him home). Liers are cowards. Cowards/liers shouldn't have pets.
It happened to me all the time as well Dogbabi. When I had one being surrendered by its owner, they signed a release form and in turn gave any information in order to help rehome. This was a list of the reasons:
Barks too much. +Costs too much to feed. +Don`t have the time for it. +We just had a baby. +On my way to prison. +Digs too much. +Divorce or seperation +Moving to a home where no pets allowed +unemployeed +owner is deceased + tired of the responsibility __________________________________________ = just don`t want it anymore.
Makes you wonder what they do with their blood related children. Dogs don`t costs near as much to feed, you don`t have to buy them a car or pay their insurance, you don`t even have to put them through college. So why can`t they buy a $14.00 bag of dog food and feed it and care for it until it passes of old age. They don`t live nearly as long as people!!!

I agree. They want to rid themselves of the responsiblilty of being a pet owner. Too bad we don't have a training center for new pet owners to attend before getting a pet. Most new pet owners don't realize how much care a pet actually requires.
I totally agree with you friend but wanted to share another that is just totally NON feeling...This was an excuse told a few years ago and was suppose to have been from the Hollywood area. A Cocker Spaniel had been givin up by its owner BECAUSE she just had her house remodeled and the dogs color didn`t match the new color scheme!!!!

I think the worst story I got was from a horse dealer/blacksmith. Basically it was "If you don't take him, we're going to shoot him."
This was a 34" blood bay pony - no white - about a 7y/o gelding. He had been locked in his stall for about 3 years. He got out and they couldn't catch him. Somebody threw a rock at him and hit him over his left eye. The rock opened a cut that went from below his left ear down through the eye and to the middle of his nose - about 8 inches. And they were going to shoot him!
I said bring him over. His face was so swollen he couldn't drink - used a basting syringe to get water down his throat. Vet came - the eyeball was torn beyond repair - it was removed. I had to put medicine in four times a day for 10 days.
He turned out to be the best broke pony I ever played with - neck reined - good stop - trusted people enough to turn to his blind side. Didn't startle at being touched on his blind side. It would have been unfair for me to keep him - he deserved a good home with nice kids who would treat him well. I put an ad in the paper - an older man called me about him and came to see him - All I was asking was $35 to cover the vet bill.
He paid me the money but refused my offer to deliver the pony to his house - about 3 miles away. He wanted the pony for his GrandKids and wanted to walk the pony home to get to know him.
Just before I moved out here I drove past his house. Spook was still there - in good shape - legs and feet still looked good - and he was in his little pasture that they kept mowed with his little stable at the one side if he wanted inside. He would have been almost 30 then.
Sometimes things work out.

That's a story with a happy ending. I'm glad you were there for the horse.
I have a pal who rescued a three-legged horse and it had some health problems and was going to be put down. He couldn't stand the thought of it and basically saved the horse's life. He still has him and it's been 3 years. The horse is fine with just the three legs. Amazing. This pal of mine, never had a horse before either. Guess he was just in the right place at the right time, same as you might have been.
I used to work at a shelter. I got especially close to one dog- the cutest thing it looked like one of those old toys called a "Puffalump." It was a chow-scottie mix and it was THE sweetest thing you will ever meet. I named him Barney until he left the shelter. He interacted with other dogs all the time...actually he was a pretty shy lazy dog. We used to take dogs to Petsmart every saturday and sunday. I took Barney home for a week until the next Saturday when we were taking the dogs to be adopted at Petsmart. Of course the minute I brought Barney in he was pretty much gone. A couple and their young daughter took him. I loved Barney so much, helped them pick out food, gave them my number for them to call me if they had questions, etc etc. This was ohhh probably over a year ago. About two months ago I get a voice message from the man and he says they can't keep Barney because he doesn't get along with their CAT!!! That annoyed the crap out of me...they've had the dog for over a year and just NOW the dog is not getting along with their very old cat?! I don't get it! While we're on the subject...it also annoys the you-know-what out of me when I would be working at the shelter and some of the volunteers would find litters on the side of the road near the shelter and one time on the HWY! Why do that?! Why not just bring the freakin litter to the shelter- at least the puppies have a CHANCE that way!
they don't bring them into the shelters because they are cowards! they would rather toss them over the fence or leave them in a box and pretend they solved the problem...bunch of jerks out there in this world who don't give a rat's butt about animals!
To Bar B, you are right about the older dogs. The saddest dogs in the shelter are the senior dogs who were once loved and part of a family. They are so lost and lonely. They cannot understand why the lifestyle they have grown accustomed to has halted instantly.
I have no sympathy for ANYONE who drops off the family pet for some pathetic reason such as and here are the winning LIES..."moving", "baby on the way", "allergies", and "some story about the dog attacking someone"....most are total LIES to relive guilt.

i heard this lady come in one day while i was looking at the animals in the shelter and tell the guy working there she could not keep her chihuhua any longer because it had killed its mate. that was the first time I'd heard that one. Highly doubtful a chi would kill another chi. JMO

Maybe these poor sods couldnt afford to keep them anymore?
shem=if these poor sods couldn't afford to keep them anymore, they (A) shouldn't have gotten them in the first place (B) could have tried to find a home for them on their own or (C) could have said they simpley could not afford to keep the animal any longer how hard is that to say? you said it, it must not be very difficult. The question was why do they lie about their pets, not why they don't want them anymore. If I couldn't afford my pet, (#1) that would never happen and (#2) if it did, I would say so. Not make up some outrageous story.
I do not understand why people do it either but all I have to say to those that do lie about animals you are selling that it can come back and bite you in the A&& so its a good idea to just be upfront on the reason why you are selling a particular animal.
