I just got a few more guinea pigs and 2 of them have a slight bald spot on their face. It looks like the hair is growing back and the skin looks alright. They seem very healthy otherwise. Someone told me that this could be some kind of fungus that they get. Anyone have any info on this? And if it is, how its treated? .........also I have a very pregnant teddy guinea pig and she is losing hair on the sides of her (big!) belly. She is fed guinea pig pellets and other things too, like carrots, kale, etc. So I dont think its from vit c deficiency. Do they sometimes get like this when they are about to have babies? (Someone told me this also.) She seems very lively and healthy. Thanks ahead for any advice anyone can give me!

We have two guinea pigs, but we use to hav 8..LOL We lost one just a few weeks ago. When we bought her we knew she might be pregnant..Well as she got bigger she seemed to loose some fur. She was excessively grooming herself. I took her to the vet, and they didn't find anything, as far as a fungus or mites or anything. Another thing that I found with my guinea pigs, is sometimes the chewed eachother fur until they had a bald spot, but the hair quickly grew back. My family though I was nuts bringing guinea pigs to the vet, but atleast now I know. I didn't have any pregnant pigs after, but I have heard about them loosing hair while being pregnant. But just watch you pigs a bit, they could be over grooming going on as well. You do have to watch over for fungus, though, and doubt, try to find a vet that knows some about guinea pigs, I found they are extremely delicate animals. Best of luck, and wait until you see the babies..They are amazing, they are born up and running...LOLSmile

It is most likely mites and they are a fairly commen problem with Guinea Pigs. Best thing to treat with is Ivomec but go to a vet first to make sure thats what it is.

Like RB said, make sure your giving plenty of Vitamin C, but please dont use the drops that they sell in the pet stores. They also contain other vitamins and if you overdo it it can be dangerous. I would recommend going to GNC and getting a Vitamin C supplement for her.

As for bald spots behind the ears, this is normal for all GP's and Rabbits.

Just so you know, if it is mites, its ok to treat with Ivomec when they are pregnant unlike other breeds of animals.

Good luck and let us know what happens.

We took our rabbits to the vet and they has mites. He put some type of drops in the ears. I haven't noticed them itching as bad.

Hi........its me again. I started ALL of my guinea pigs on Vit C supplements mixed in their water. The ones who had hair loss are now all growing new hair! Anyway, I got 3 babies out of my black/white female. They are sooo cute. She had an orange/black male with a white spotted coronet(?), a female brown agouti with red spots, and a pure white female. (big variety on colors!!!). Then my choco & white girl had 2 baby girls (both white with red and black spots). I still have 1 more girl yet to have! I also have gotten a new little boy who is curly (i think hes a teddy?). My aunt has some of them, so I'm going to be getting a female also. I really like them. They can be alot of work though if you have more than a few. Mine have to have their cages cleaned out like every other day, plus every day I clean their water bottles/dishes and their food bowls. Then the feeding takes a little time ( I cut all their fresh veggies up for them!) They are such sweet little pets though!!! They are worth it. Thanks everyone for the suggestions and advice!
