Question: why do so many people come to an animal shelter expecting to find a purebred dog for a small adoption fee? sure, there are occasionally a few of them, but not for the most part. A pure bred generally costs a bit more than a shelter's adoption fee.

7 years ago, we purchased a purebred Golden Retriever. She was puchased at a purebred shelter, for the purebred price. Later, we found out that she wasn't exactly a purebred. Her coat didn't grow full length, and and she didn't reach the height mark for a Golden.
Maybe, the people hear about a cheap dog that they say is a purebred, but it doesn't quite meet the full requirements of the breed. If you ever bought, or soon will buy, look out. There are some dog-dealers out there that'll do whatever it takes to get their dogs sold.

So how did the "purebred breeder" get the money back from selling his dog at the shelter? Consignment? Smile

I'm wondering if you got AKC papers on your purebred Golden?

I knew of quite a few places that were "privately owned" shelters that did the same thing.. they'd take in mix breeds for $20 a pup if they "looked purebred", and register them with another litter they had and would sell them as purebreeds...for quite a mark-up too.

All I can say is that one can hope that DNA testing may weed out more of these people that profit from lying about the papers...

Just because a puppy is registered with AKC does NOT mean the breeder is ethical or trustworthy...

I think this is done differently in different areas of the country (at least US).

A few years ago I was looking at a purebreed in one of our local shelters. The dog was registered with AKC and offered for the same price as other adoptees. At that time the shelter did not have its own vet. So proof of neutering was required in order to receive the registration.

Another one of our shelters never says the dog is purebreed. They always say mixed. I once adopted a tiny YorkieX from them, though I personally couldn't detect any other breed in the dog. No papers were offered. My vet and groomer always claimed the dog was full.

I do volunteer work at our local animal shelter and occasionally a true pure bred dog does come in with papers. We got a lhaso apso with her papers and tried to get her adopted online. No one wanted her. I guess they didn't believe she was purebred. The dog's owner had passed away and her kids didn't want it. We ended up giving it to one of our vet's parents and they didn't even want the purebred papers-they were just so happy to have the little doggie. Who knew? I guess you can never tell. I generally tell people that it looks purebred, but we can never be sure because we don't have the parents of the pup and you know when people bring in animals they will tell you just about anything. I don't know why it's so hard for them to just tell you the facts, but no, you get these big elaboraborate nonsense stories you have to listen to and it's so ridiculous because they think they are fooling you. They aren't. Maybe it's their guilty consciences for dumping the dog???

In our area there are lots of purebreds in the shelter, mostly the hyper breeds that unaware buyers werent prepared for, but occasionally there are English Bulldogs, Frenchies, Yorkies and Pugs. But your everyday purebred in the shelter is mostly Border Collies, Austrailian Shepherds, Terriers, Boxers, Rotts, Beagles (hard to housebreak) and Dobies. Most get dropped off with papers but our shelter just throws them away. All dogs are spayed/neutered on the spot, which I think is very responsible.

In my area people think of dogs as throw away pets, its very sickening!

Has anyone ever seen or heard of a brindle Doberman?I came across a website advertising hem for $2000.I do not want one-I am just curious as to how they compare to other Dobies as far as breed standard.Surely there has to be a faulty gene somewhere in the line that these people keep breeding for.And yes,I'm nosey,so I would indeed like to see one.BUT NOT OWN OR BREED ONE!!!
THANKS! Eek

I think it is wrong when people sell you an animal for the price of a purebred and don't actually give you a purebred. I plan on having a breeding facility as well as a veterinary facility and plan to sell purebreds that are purebreds for less than the usual price, I don't care about a profit I just want the puppies that I breed to have a good home where they will be loved. I plan to also be able to prove that they are purebred should anyone ask. I still think it is wrong to do that to people. I wish there was some way you could get a refund on your golden retriever. Personally, I have a mini dachshund, a chihuahua, a weimaraner, a half chihuahua and hound, and a half chow and half lab. I love them all but only plan on breeding the purebred ones and fixing the others.

At my local shelter all fees are the same rather pure or mixed. The fee is only $15.00 if the dog is already altered. Other than that the normal fee is $55.00.

It's the same at the local animal shelter around here. Their fee is $20 and if it needs to be spayed/neutered, then it's $47. The vet said they charge the animal shelter according to what the animal shelter charges for adoptions. I'm not sure how that works exactly, but the vet does use the Maddie's fund to help out with the spay/neuter charges.
It doesn't matter if the dog is mixed, pure bred, or has akc papers, same price. Big or small, short or tall. Smile
