Hi,

I was wondering if anyone else here is infatuated by those adorable little pocket pets? I personally have 16 rats (and breed the furless variety on occassion) as well as a few dozen spiny mice. I've had fancy mice in the past but don't any longer and currantly I have a pet rabbit and two chinchillas (I know they're not technically rodents, but they are close enough!) Well, I hope someone else is out there who feels like saying hi on behalf of their rodent friends. Smile

I love rats. I think they are more intelligent, loyal and loving than most dogs or cats. I love dogs and cats and have both. But if you have ever owned a pet rat, you will understand what I mean. I currently have rabbits and chinchillas, my bf says that is the closest I can get to owning a rat! Rats terrify and disgust him, but he is only used to the wild rats.

Hi!!! I've been thinking of getting a pet rat. I have heard they make great pets. I've owned hamster, gerbils and mice before, but never a rat. What do you like most about them? I'd appreciate any other info on them to help in my decision. Thanks!!!

I am and have for over 12 years(also here and there all my life) loved/owned rodents.I still have one bunny. But in the past have owned/ raised..sugar gliders, rabbits, hamsters, chinchillas.
they make great pets, good for people in apartments,or not alot of time to walk a dog. They can be loving. And with one rabbit I raised in the house and housebroke was the smartest rabbit I ever saw! She would sleep in my bed,get on the table like a cat, fight the Collie dog over Pizza scraps, and do a full circle in the air when you hid and called her name looking for you, which was really funny as she was a lop ear and made her look like a helicopter.LOL
I hear rats are just as smart. They can really fool you if given the chance!!

I've had a whole plethera of animals from cats and dogs to various small herbivorous reptiles and rodents galore... still I think rats are my all time favorite and I can't see myself living without them. I have a furless litter planned for another 3 weeks and I'm all excited about that and just can't wait. Those buggars have completely won me over. Smile

Hi what is the difference between a regular rat and a fancy rat? Do they look different and are they smarter or something?

There is no difference between a 'regular' rat and a fancy rat. There are 'feeder' rats (those bred for the sole purpose of being someone's lunch- these are the ones priced by size at the petshop) and then there are 'fancy' rats who are bred as pets by someone. Either can be any color or standard but you're much more likely to see 'fancy' stuck on the cage of the prettier rats... That's just the sad way it is. *sigh*

I too had pet rats until recently. I had 2 albino rats that I breed the female got impossible to handle after her first litter of 12 which was her first litter ever and all babies survived amazed the heck out of me. Rascal was my male. I took him everywhere even got a little ferret leash for him when he got bigger so I could take him outside. He sat on my shouler and slept on the back of my neck curled up in my hair. I miss him alot. Frown
