I was recently giving a Sun Conure that picks his feathers. I am looking for possible solutions to this problem. Seems to me that I have read years ago, that once a feather picker, always a feather picker. I just need to find info that can maybe help me solve his problems and make him beautiful in EVERYONE'S eyes, he already is beautiful in my eyes although he does not like anything or anyone around his cage.

You say you were just recently given...by someone else or like bought from some place for you? I have a green cheek that I was fostering but have decided to keep. I noticed hes picking his feathers so I took him to his original breeder and she thinks its stress related or a bad molt. She told me to give it a month and see if it changes...if not he may be allergic to something but she beleves its stress from move and that can take him a bit to get over.

He was given to me because his former owner was tired of him. I have several birds and have never encountered a feather picker. This bird was a feather picker when given to the person that gave him to me. He has been passed around a lot but stayed in his last home for about 4 or 5 years before I got him. I am planning on this being his forever home. I have a hard time giving up anything when I get them, they usually live out their life here.

I have bought vitamins to put in his water. And he is used to eating apples and some fresh things.

I am continuing my search to see about solving his problems.

I can only imagine that if he has been passed around so much that stress is prob playing a big part in it. He could be allergic to something hes been eating. I dont know if you want to call long distance but there is a place called Featherlust Farm here in my state of CT http://www.featherlustfarm.com/store.htm the woman there knows her stuff. She might be able to give you some ideas on what to do. Maybe you have a place in your area you could call, but if you dont and can call the long distance call the owner of Featherlust shes very good. I hope he finds a permanant home with you...he may just need some TLC which if someone just gave him away cause they were tired of him sounds to me like he wasnt getting it...Goodluck to you and your baby Smile

It could be because he's just bored and dosen't trust anybody yet..

First things first I would take him to an avian vet to rule out any underlieing causes that may cause him to feather pick. Not always once a feather picker always a feather picker. Its just a devil to get them to stop. But I would stop at the vets office and have them run tests. IF all checks out there I would check into some preening toys to "hopefully" take his attention away from his feathers. Get him a good variety of toys to play with too, he might be doing it because hes bored.

I would do as Dals said. A thorough vet check then LOTS and LOTS of toys to chew instead should help. Boredom is a big problem for feather pickers. Give him/her things to shred and things to chew. Do you have a play area for him/her? They have some NICE playgyms out there.
