What means do you use to sex your birds? For birds that can not be told by color alone. I use AMR labs. It is the easiest method I have come across and causes less stress to the bird than surgical sexing. Here is a link for those who are interested:

We were wanting to get a mate for our Senegal..we think hes a male from just the visual coloring guide we found on the internet.
But with senegals its not too easy... we had a bird surgicaly sexed one time ..ew it was scary.
I saved the web site so when we decide to try and breed him/her.

Way back when, when I was breeding and rescuing birds, our only option was surgically sexing them, IF we wanted to be able to tell the clients "it's a HE" or "It's a SHE". This came along about 10 years too late for me, LOL!

health gene will not only do sexing by testing a feather,blood on a card or in a tube but they will do a full health profile too.
I sexed out 5 baby senegals only to find 4 male and 1 female, but I am currently handfeeding one male and one female

what do they charge to do the full health profile?

they charge $86 for what they call the avian health awareness profile.
aspergilkus, psittacosis, cryptosporiduim, tuberculosis,, toxi gondi, trichomonas
they also have tests for PBFD, polyoma virus, pachecos, paramyxovirus,west nile and bordetella.
and they do avian fingerprinting (for id in lost birds)

Wow, that is very reasonable considering all they check for. I might add alot cheaper than what my vet charges me for the same thing.

I draw my own samples and your vet might do this for you as well for a fee- or some you can do with a swab and blood on the cards-not sure what exactly they require for that profile as far as a sample goes.

I found a new place for dna sexing and mulititude of other testing. Its called Buccal dna testing. You swab the inside of the birds mouth. You can do it at any age. I have just sent out 3 samples for testing. The cost is $20.00, which is less than the feather testing and just a bit more than the blood. They also combine testing for one price.

AMR Labs only charges 20. per bird and they do blood testing. You clipped a nail to get a drop of blood on the corner of a card they send you. They will test the bird and send out a nice certificate with the birds name and all on it stating its DNA sex.
