I have a 6 yr old double yellow-headed amazon, I have had him about 3weeks.. He was doing good, but now is acting out... He was a rescue I took in, he lived outdoors his whole life and was NOT handeled... He was stepping up, and was doing better, he is not a bird that will let you pet him, but is getting a little better. But latley he makes this weird sound when you try to have him step up, is sounds like a growl, I am a little freaked out, and he has bit me offten so now i use a towel over my arm before i have him step up, today he tried to bite through the towel???? my question is I wonder if i should back off when he does that or continue? I have been to see a few bird specialist around my area and his vet they all say "don't act afraid" now thats hard when you know how hard they bite.... Now I don't want to give up on him!!! I have amazon books, been to 10000 internet sites, talked to Fine feathered friends. and my vet.. Any help you can give me anyone, I want to try to tame him a little, we were doing so good now its going down hill, I also waqtched "How to train your parrot" thanks in advanced Tina

this is typical- new birds don't know what to expect but now that he's settling in- you are seeing his true side. if his eyes are flashing (large then small pupils) that is a warning that he is too excited and may bite- working with him will help but if its a male- you will be better off to wait until breeding season is over (winter)
