I recently purchased two parakeets. One is a green female and one is a yellow female.
They were purchased as a breeding pair.
The lady I bought them from said to boil an egg and place it whole on top of a piece of lettuce and place it in the bottom of the cage so that they can freely eat it for protein.
I also purchased a small box and placed it in the cage for nesting, is there anything I should put in the cage or box to make it more comfortable for them?
Also is there anything else I should feed them other than the bird seed ? I have the thick strands of seed to hang in the cage and they seem to love that, they also have the loose parakeet seed.
Any suggestions would be appreciated , thank you.

you can offer then all kinds of foods but remember you must remove it from the cage after a few hours or it will spoil. the egg should be crumbled up and realy only offered when they have babies (its really fattening) or only offered once/week.
you can give things like shreaded carrots, beets, greens, apples. many smaller birds like there treats hung up from the cage floor and some will not eat if they are on the floor (or not as well)the thick seed you are talking about is millet (there is a lot of it in their normal seed) so don't over do that- maybe just a small piece or just once/week. you can also make them birdie bread, bean mixes, just do a search for bird recipes.
also give them a cuttlebone (soft side facing them)
after they finish a clutch, remove the nestbox or they may go right back to nest (2 clutches back to back is the most you want any hen to do even if you are taking the babies to handfeed)
if she nests in open dishes, change to a covered type of dish.
hope this helps.

yes, that's true, by the nostrils. Also, I've heard them having darker spots on their cheeks as well.

The yellow is supposed to be the male, he has white spots on his cheeks, the green is supposed to be the female, she has blue spots on her cheeks. I think the yellow is the female and the green is the male.
The green is thicker, more stout and wide. Also more aggressive.
The yellow has very light skin on the base of the beak, the green has very dark skin on its beak.
They have a breeding box in the cage, they also have a small box of housing stuff I bought at Petsmart, all it is is small pieces of cut up string.
I have been keeping them a boiled egg in the bottom of their cage and they really love to eat them.
I don't think they stay in the box at all, they seem to fight alot, then they seem to kiss each other and clean out each others feathers.
How can you tell if they are mating or wanting to?

Another good food for parakeets is regular Cheerios. I just started feeding these to my birds and they love them.

I don't breed birds...but I do own two budgies and I give them lettuce, broccoli, and millet..but I don't know if I can give them "corn" on the cob, raw? even cooked..stupid question, but I don't want two deceased birds from lack of knowledge..

I don't even know if they like stuff like that!
