When my middle son was a toddler, he would put that video in all of the time. At the time it was just background noise for me. So, every time he left the room, I would fast forward it until I heard him coming - just to get through the movie.
Then I started really listening and watching. It is the best movie. I am surprised that it isn't listed by more people. The script is fantastic. For example - instead of just saying "it is getting dark", the script says "the light was getting soft and purple outside..". If I were an English teacher, I would use it to get students to write more descriptively.
I guess another appeal is that I was growing up towards the end of that period. So, I remember much of the way home life was at that time. The world was so innocent. My dreams were so much like Ralphie's. It is easy to identify with him and his daily life.
Sorry to ramble - you can see I am a little fanatical over the movie. My sons purchased a new copy for me as a Christmas present one year. The old one was worn out - wonder why?
Green Mile is a great one!! If I had been thinking, it would have been my 2nd choice. I cried for the last 30 minutes of that one.

Yea, I remember that time as a child, too & it was so real. The kids started watching it & like you it was just something to keep them busy during Christmas vacation. Then one afternoon, I sat down with them & watched it. I was hooked. The Green Mile was just a darn good movie! My husband had tears in his eyes at the end.
