In our time of need the red cross has been there and any donations will go to them for now on.

Hooray for the American Red Cross!

I'm glad they helped you in your time of need but they will not get a nickel of my money.

They won't get any of mine either. hey were nothing but hateful to me whe our trailer burned - sat there and argued with me that there was no fire because I called the police instead of the fire department - it was already 90% out and had burned to the axle.

I don't have a problem donating food or water but I refuse to hand over money. when you don't really know who will get it or how much of what you give goes to them in NO!I know it sounds cold but such is life. Did you here on TV that those that was effected by the storm will be getting $2000.00 per adult ? I know that wont cover alot that was lost but hell that is more then what most people get....

PD, I'm pretty sure they said $350 for single person and up to $2000 per family. Also heard that people were trying to pretend to be victims to get their free money. Wow that's pretty low! spank
Well, I certainly saw that one coming? DUH! I just wonder how many actually pull it off? I'll bet there are many

FEMA is handing out $350 to $1600 per family but Red Cross is handing $2000 per adult. I just heard it on the news, so they are getting it from 2 seperate sources.

Well I did not hear about the $350. I just heard about the $2000.00. I also heard that the government is going to help them get housing. Deep I really don't care that these people get moneies some of them most likely live off the government as it is, you know welfare.I have a problem with how they are getting it. mark my words you and I or any tax payer will be paying for these people for a very long time.Let me ask you this how long will you allow you guest to stay in your home? will you expect them to work or at least look for a job?I was watching the news last night an there was a woman that took in 31 family members because of the storm. she said that she wishes she could get help with her power bill! I believe in helping but you must also help yourself. I mean shoot if I had 31 people living in my house and most of them are adults these people would be looking for jobs or trying to get assistance some how.I am sorry if I sound cold but why cause hardship on yourself to help others?

I have to say the money they are getting is not that much. Who knows if that is all they will ever get and they need to feed their family. Plus that is what my donations were intended for is to help the victims so I am happy with them getting the money. Now I know they are being helped. One lady was on TV and she said she has a place to live (rent) but she didn't have a deposit to put down, now she does. So she is already trying to help herself. It would be hard walking around without any money at all, so to know they can start on their own with that little amount is good. I couldn't imagine not being in control of my life but having a debit card should would help put me back on track.

I am sorry but no one told thousands of people to stay down there.I do realize that some where old or could not get out but come on have you not seen the news where people was stealing tv's and things that are not for surviving! or have you seen on the news that lil girls or women was being rape/killed .. I have no compassion for people that do these things. you can not say what is going on is right.there are people down there that still refuse to leave.Again I feel bad and hope that they will get some help but I do not want to foot the bill forever. I don't mind donating what is needed. But you have to draw the line somewhere. what was heartless about my statement? I believe if you are able body to work you need to try to find a job to help yourself. I know if I was in their shoes I would not expect to live off of the shelters or people that took me in .I would try my damnest to get a place or at least a job to help those who are helping me..There is no free ride in this world . if that is cold or cruel I am sorry..

Deep I was raise dirt poor and I know all about birth control lol. As I said I don't want people to think I am heartless ..Yes I know some of them are dirt poor but believe me, you know they were not living on nothing before the storm I am sure they were recieving food stamps or some kind of aid.I think the government needs to help with the housing and a short term of assistance money or food wise.NO will not be on it's feet for years down the road! does that mean we should take care of them that long? I know I am the bad guy for saying this, but I know what it is to do without and if I am correct those that are not as bad off meaning they own their homes I am sure the government will speed up their insurance claims don't you?

What they are getting is a $2000 debit card from FEMA and anywhere from $360 to $1600 (depending on family size) from the Red Cross.

Well, if these people were on welfare anyway, we've been taking care of them all along, long before Katrina ever showed up.

Personally, I agree with what most have said here. If I were in their shoes, and staying at someone's house, you better bet that I'd be out every day pounding the streets for a job. Nothing's free!

On the other hand, if they were staying in my house, I would certainly give them a couple of weeks to come out of their shock and get a game plan together in their minds too.

Former Presidents Bush and Clinton said that all WalMarts across the country will give automatic jobs to any WalMart employees from the affected communities. That's a good start!

Every able bodied man needs to try and get a job with clean up and rebuilding that community too. They're going to need plenty of help to do it, and they'll get paid for it. The opportunities are out there---they just need time to find their family members and get over the shock of losing everything.

Poodlemania--quit being a jack off.

Having lived through three concurrent hurricanes last year I know what those people are going through. It burns me to hear someone like PD make that sort of blanket statement. Those that have never experienced it can only imagine. Denise I am not being a jack off but can start if you want me too so back off.

I have heard many of the relocated storm survivors state that they wish to remain where the presently are and not return to their original state. This is going to put a huge strain on the new state's resources, especially if these people are poor, ill, uneducated, and/or unwilling to work.

Well, Poodlemania, not to put too fine a point on it, but why would you remain where hurricanes are a threat for six months out of every single year?

It's only been 2 weeks since the hurricane, I am sure for some reality has not set in, as it hasn't totally set in for some that weren't even affected. But that is alot of people that need help. However they lived before, rich or poor, they still need to start somewhere and they aren't going to be able to do it without support, mentally and financially. Just because some were looters doesn't mean everyone should suffer. Plus alot of the people did get out, just because they are staying in a shelter doesn't mean they didn't leave before the storm. They had no where to go don't punish them for living in a shelter and saying they shouldn't get money. They didn't all stay behind and they didn't all try and steal TV's. there was a couple on TV last night, very well to do couple but when they evacuated she didn't take her debit cards or checkbook, or ID. Now they have no money, that they can get their hands on anyways, so they are taking handouts. That has to be hard. They worked hard all their life they shouldn't be punished. And the people that were poor shouldn't be thought of any less than human. You can't treat the rich different than the poor, that is called discrimination. I don't care if they ate off gold plated plates or paper plates they are all the same and all going through a real rough time and this isn't the time to judge them.
