SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT

How many people (in US) remember seeing those signs on the roads & highways? I don't understand why they aren't more frequently put up to remind people.

Slow traffic in the left lane is one of my biggest peeves. No, I am not a road rage person. But, if research was done, this would probably surface as one of the top reasons for road rage.

First, I am an excellent driver. But time has always been of the essence to me - not by choice. It seems that I have always commuted long distances to classes, work, private schools, etc. I pass through 33 traffic lights between work & home.

When you pass through that many lights, people that block traffic by driving even with the person in the right lane cost a lot of time. Then there are the people that are sitting in the right lane as you (in the left lane) are approaching the red light. What do they do? - They pull over in front of you just as you get to the light. Are they in a hurry? No, evidently not, because they just sit there when the light changes.

It irritates me that people who drive below the speed limit and/or block the traffic in both lanes are never mentioned in the TV shows on road accidents or road rage. These people and people that speed up just to prevent faster drivers from passing need to be ticketed as much as the speeders.

Before you think I have had a bad day, let me say that I have not. In fact since I am home for the summer I am driving very little.

The drivers that do those things are probably the same people that wait until they get to checkout to pull out the checkbook or their wallet. Apparently they don't realize they must pay for their purchases until the cashier tells them the amount!!

They must also be the same people that after finally emerging from a crowded event (movie, ball game, play, etc.) get through the door and stop to talk to their companions (leaving everyone else still blocked in the doorway.

Possibly they are the same ones that stop in the middle of the mall to decide where to go next (leaving everyone else to stop suddenly or tumble into the person in front of them). These people also come out from a store in the mall and stop in front of everyone else walking through the mall.

What is it with people like this? Are they not aware of others around them? Are they not aware that they are inconveniencing so many people?

One more example and I will stop. Have you seen people that miss their road, stop in heavy traffic, and try to cross (& block) several lanes to make their turn? Why don't they just go on to the next available turn and go back? It would be safer (& probably quicker for them) for them and for the other drivers.

These irritations have built up over my 49 years on this earth. I just wonder if I am the only one that notices these things. Perhaps if I had nothing to do all day, I would be like these people. But, I can't imagine that.

I agree with you and I totally understand where you are coming from. I think the general population is just self-centered and seriously inconsiderate of others most of the time, especially when they get behind the wheel. I really get irritated at the people who get in the left lane to turn right. They do it around here all the time and I'd really like to have a big ol truck sometimes and just ram them and push them back into the right lane. haha!!

It does cross your mind from time to time.

Remember that song - "Here's your sign"? I wish I had a few to pass out. I once told my husband that I wished I had a neon sign on my bumper that said SLOWER TRAFFIC KEEP RIGHT. That way, when I finally got the opportunity to pass I could turn it on for them to read.

You are both right. Like you both said, people don't care about anybody but themselves. I think that people are hypocritical about driving, too. When I am riding as a passenger in one of my friends' cars, they get mad and beep their horn at people who cut them off and go too slow, but several times my friends have cut others off without thinking twice about it. On vacation in New Orleans once, my mom was driving 0nly 15 or 20 miles miles an hour. She would have sreamed out the window to someone else, if they were driving that slow.

AHAA have you ever been to Charlotte NC? I moved here from Atlanta- where everyone drives like maniacs (including myself). Here in Charlotte...you'd think every lane was the right lane...ugh

Cat, you know, maybe it is a Carolina thing. I have lived here all of my life, but these people are clueless on the roads.

I have made several trips to Birmingham, Alabama for Augmentative conferences. These take me through Atlanta. Plus, a friend and I go to shop from time to time. Now, those are some drivers!! Like you, I fit right in!! I guess most of the traffic blockers get weeded out into the more rural routes. I don't see how they could survive on those highways, freeways, whatever.

I used to live in California and moved out here to North Carolina.
We lived in Northern California for most of our lives, traffic was slow, the town was small, everyone knew everyone and everyone was related LOL.
Then we moved to San Diego. Traffic is hell down there. I-5 (AHHHH) is horrendous. I didn't have a drivers license but I often drove out there.
Then we movied to North Carolina. Out on Hwy 70, you can be going 65-70 mph and people are STILL riding your ass. I'm sitting there going almost 70mph the other day in the left lane and this guy speeds right up and decides to stick the nose of his truck under my car (this is an exaggeration LOL). I felt like slamming on my brakes to see what would happen, but decided against it since I've only had my car for a week. LOL.
So my question is, does your comment about "slower traffic keep right" pertain to those who go 20+ over the speed limit and you're in the hurry? Or just to those who are going 35 in the left lane? LOL

DragonFly, if you are going the speed limit, then driving in the left lane is not a problem; until you see a faster driver or drivers approaching. Then, yes, you need to move over. Continuing to driver slower and blocking faster drivers only backs up traffic and prevents it from moving smoothly. The left lane should be available for passing when the need arises.

If someone is going 75 mph, when I'm going almost 70, there is no way that I'm moving over for that person. They shouldn't be going that fast anyway!

By not moving over, provided that there is an empty lane, you are backing up traffic. Backed up traffic leads to accidents. Ticketing speeders should be left to the Highway Patrol, just as people not obeying the other driving laws.

Also, I can't stand it when I'm in the left lane and someone rides my ass. Get in the other lane!

Hey, if I'm going 70 mph I'm not backing up traffic.

DragonFly, I agree. If I am in the right lane and they are riding me, that is their problem. Like you said they can go around. Of course my husband says if they are riding my bumper, they must "really be flying". Smile
