I would say that it depends on WHY you do it. Are you doing it just for fun...just for the heck of it, or do you find yourself "compelled" to do it?? Does it bother you if you can't do it for some reason? Is the urge to do it overwhelming at times? If you answer yes to those questions, then you definitely have OCD. If your doing it just to kill some spare time once in a while, then I'd say you don't and are just wierd! LOL!

I have to take a sentence, the more words the harder, and AS QUICKLY as possible, I pair up the letters there are two of disregarding the other letters. I then have to make a word, or as many words as I can. e.g.
border collies
2 r's (paired up make one)
2 l'ls = 1
2 e's = 1 e
2 o's = 1 o
======= ROLE!!!!!!!
Tragic or what........

I suppose I can't stop myself, but I don't feel compelled, it is sort of a habit done mostly in the car to street names posters etc., I don't do it in the house, and yes, it bothers me only a little bit when I can't make a word, but no more than that !!

Interesting post, thankyou Crystalk.

Well, based on what you've said, I'd say you do have a mild case of OCD, but it doesn't sound like it's anything to worry about. IF, this is the only compulsion you have, that is. Are there others? Something I've discovered with my husband, is that he has many compulsions that to HIM are not compulsions, but are quite obvious to me as an outsider looking in. So, it's very possible that you DO have other "habits" that you see as normal. As long as it's not something that seems to "rule" your life, or something that bothers you or others around you because you do it, then I wouldn't consider it a problem!!

Crystal...Does your hubby keep his OCD hid from others other then you?...Nobody had a clue of mine until 1998 when I started therapy and I told my therapist...I was always deeply ashamed of it (still am) so it was a secret...
Hmmm, my nick should be "Secret" I'm just loaded with them...LOL...Just-Me

Well, yes and no. When he feels a compulsion in public, he tries to hide it. He still does it (like the rapping of the knuckles), but he tries to be incognito so know one sees it. But, what's funny, is that he always looks at me to see if I've noticed. I NEVER call him on it in public, but as soon as we are alone we usually have a good laugh about it!!!

I'm not so sure if he hides it because he's ashamed of it, or because he deep down, knows it's not normal in most people's eyes and doesn't want to be asked about it. He always tries to minimize the issue when we've discussed it, but at the same time I do feel he is embarrassed by it. He is also ADHD...Im' not sure if the two are related but in my opinion some of the symptoms overlap each other. At least in his case they do.

Well, my husband was put on Imiprimine about 5 years ago. He took it for 2 days and quit. Then last year he was put on Prozac. He took it for 2 days and quit. So, I do know there ARE meds out there for it, but whether it works or not, I'LL never know!!!

In my opinion, Prozac causes more harm than it can do good.

Just-Me:
You can take St.John's Wart (herbal remedy) and melatonin to help calm your nerves.

Much better to go and visit your doctor and tell them exactly what is going on with you. They can help, but you have to be truthful with them and tell the doctor everything you do.
Good luck with this!

Just me, There are some wonderful SRI's on the market that are serotonin-uptake-inhibitive specific that are used for depression. Sometimes they are used in conjunction with other drugs to relieve panic attacks, and/or OCD and a few other disorders. Did your therapist suggest any drug in particular???

Whoa..no you are not nuts, but your are, without a doubt, OCD. And one of the most fascinating I've heard of. That is VERY interesting that you do that. Give me some more examples if you don't mind...

Dja think so? I know I am lots of things but never considered myself with an OCD. I get toally fixated on something and it must be done a specific way that in my mind makes sense. I always feel a camera is on me, or I am performing for an audience, whether out in public or alone. Have for about 20 years. It's like there is someone in the room with me at all times. I am a clean freak but don't need to close doors any set number of times or any of those other things posted here. I can get so worked up about loud noises or kids yelling at each other etc. that I feel like I am going to start running and never stop. I often feel like I am going to fall off a ledge or something, I often right myself like as if I have tripped or stumbled, but it is just in my mind. I usually gasp a bit too. My family are used to me now, laughing, and just ignore me, but it sometimes is embarassing in public because I am too young to be dottie like this.

Well, that depends on the person taking it and the reasons for taking it. You can say that for just about anything really.

SmileMy best friend is also an RN(as I am) and she taught drugs among other topics in college and was terrified of any drug for her O/C disorder and obsessive fixation on a broken relationship. She did, however, take Paxil with some decent results. BUT, she felt she knew more than her psychiatrist(another part of her problem) and quit taking it. I could tell within 3 days that she was off it!!! It can help. There is a new drug Lexapro for depression and used with Lorazepam or such has been very successful in alleviating the pain and suffering of OCD and sveral other conditions..

Ok, I know this is a really strange one. I also count syllables. Except, I don't count them on my fingers. If someone is talking to me, I will count the syllables using their left ear, left eye, nose, mouth, right eye, right ear. I will keep track of syllables until all of the have been used the same amount of times. I know, I am strange!!

Also, when I was younger, whenever I was in the car, I would count windows on houses. I outgrew that.
