I agree with you to a certian point TG, I think when someone does something out of line and it is over drugs and/or alchohol then they are still responsible for their actions and are guilty twice as bad for drinking or whatever in the first place to then turn around and do something else stupid.

Exactly TG, you are a mature and responsible person, so therefore you would take responsibilty for your actions rather than whine and beg for pity.

I do have to disagree about the alcholic part that it is the persons fault. Alcoholism can be hereditary, a chemical inbalance. You cannot control your chemical balance or imbalance therefore if you are an alcoholic due to chemical imbalance, then no it is not "the" persons fault for drinking. If you become an alcoholic because you misused alcohol and it eventually lead to you being an alcoholic then yes it is that persons fault. But you cannot point fingers at someone with a problem without knowing where the problem derived. Sorry, that is how it is. Street drugs is totally different then alcohol, street drugs should never be used therefore yes it is that persons fault.

Sheltie you can not blame a parent or grand parent because you are a alcholic.Sorry but I don't buy it. I say that as a child you can see that your parents drank but you don't have to do as your parents do.

I have dealt with alcoholics before. I have a couple of friends that have gone through treatment and I was there for them everyday. I studied alcoholism in my free time. I tried to udnerstand it. I am not saying that it is only handed down to a person I am saying some people are because of the chenistry. Some are because they drowned theirselves in it therefore it is their fault in a way. Some people feel that is the only place they can turn to feel better. Some children see their parents as drinkers and won't touch a drop because they see what it has done to them. Whatever anyone says won't change my mind, I have done research myself therefore I know what I know. Saving just one animal won't change the world, but it will change HIS world! |

I agree with this Shelite. Alcoholism can be hereditary and some people are alcholics but have never taken a drink. It means they have the propensity to become one. And for those who become an alcholic from drinking a lot, alcohol abuse is a symptom not the real problem. Many people self medicate by drinking ... it helps to mask the "real" issues. It helps to ease pain and suffering, or at least it seems like it does but it in effect only adds a whole new host of problems. I never judge anyone ... not even one who uses street drugs. Most often a drug user is like the drinker, they are self medicating and the drugs are only a symptom. The real issues are the pain inside they are trying to mask and deal with. I have a friend who uses drugs fairly badly and she is not a bad person. She uses it to mask her pain and I always try to get her to seek counseling to help her deal with the issues that cause her to turn to it. Unfortunately however, once addiction takes over it is not just the habit of using drugs that have to stop you have to deal with withdrawal which is not pleasant for anyone. Believe it or not to those of you who honestly think I am mean spirited (I was called that the other day) I am not. I truly do care about people and I never take any solace in seeing anyone beaten up. Unless it is Rose Tamol because she came here to be a troll so she will be treated like nothing more. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. that is exactly what I was saying. That is why alcoholics that are recovering are always recovering and cannot touch alcohol again. Unfortunatly once an alcoholic always an alcoholic. Alcoholism is a disease no matter the reason it started. It is serious and shouldn't be joked around about no matter who it is. I want to make it known as well that I was giving my thoughts on alcoholism and I AM IN NO way calling anyone an alcoholic either. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation. I think it is the chemical imbalance that can cause the disease. A chemcial imbalance can lead to several types of disorders. My dad had a chemical imbalance that led to his schyzophrenia. Some chemical imbalances cause depression. I thinks ome can cause one to be prone to alcoholism. But Deep you are right it is a disease and should be treated as such.
