Well, after thinking the entire clutch was clear (infertile), it appears that Steele and Sabrina are indeed sitting on at least a couple of fertile eggs!!! Yay!
However, it seems that maybe there was some confusion and possibly Sabrina is not split to Emerald, so might not get any Emerald babies. Thats fine, they will all be Whiteface/Emeralds. I'll take it. With the temperaments of both parents, the babies should be amazing!
JasonsGal...how are your birds doing in the breeding department?

Geez I'm jealous I haven't gotten one egg yet. Even the ones who were breeding just suddenly lost interest.
Saturday I ordered some full spectrum lighting fixtures from Foster and Smith. I'm planning on hooking the lights to the back of my breeding units and setting them on a timer for about 12-13 hours of "Daylight". Hopefully that will stimulate them to do their thing. I'm getting really baby hungry.
When we get going strong I would love to do some trading with you.
The show is this Sunday! If I can keep Peggy in full flight and keep her tailfeathers intact it will be a miracle!!
Should be fun. I bought two showboxes off of hoobly. Much cheaper than new!
Yes, trading would be AWESOME, especially if "we" want to do Emeralds. Im bound and determined to add size and type to them and get them able to compete with other mutations!
TW, am I sending you a bird, too?

Oh yeah, when is your show?
Jasongal, do you gradually increase your lighting time or do you just set it for the 13 hours all at once ? charly
Charly, Truthfully, this will be a first for me. I have asked a few people's opinions and I am just going to jump into 12 hours of lighting a day. Do you have any experience with this?
MsB, Who's band does Peggy wear? Will you be showing in Novice or Advanced? Oh, wait, I guess you said it is an ACS show. The only ones I know anything about are NCS. Regardless of all this GOOD LUCK!!!

Really I have no experience with cage birds. It's just that I remember if you wanted chickens to start laying better you just did the instant switch to more "day light". I wondered if with the actual mating of birds if you had to increase it slowly to trigger the correct body responses in both males & females. As you can see I don't know a thing about this. They did a study many years ago with Racoons to start the breeding earlier with some in captivity just to see if more light would do the trick & if I remember correctly they increased the light by 15 minutes each day. It did work as I recall reading about it. We had a pair of pet quails but they were not caged most of the time (they had the run of the house a lot of the time). The hen did lay eggs but she never sat on any of them & we did not try to incubate them. charly
You can bump the light up all at once, no big deal. They adjust.
I need to get more lights on my birds downstairs.
The show is ACS...I thought I was going to have to show Advanced (eek!) but ACS is different and though Peggy is banded by an NCS advanced exhibitor, I can show her in novice in ACS. Yay! She looks pretty good, I had to pull a LOT of tailfeathers and a few flights and they have come back nicely, though her tail is not going to be quite full length by Sunday.
I think I have my upstairs birds on 12 or 13 hours of light. They are on a timer so I don't have to worry about it.

Well I finally got my first egg out of Purdy!!! Let's hope she sets because she is young and this will be her first clutch. These are going to be some great chicks I just can't wait.
JG, congrats on the egg! Hope you get a nice clutch and they are good parents!
NOW...I AM SO EXCITED TO SAY...TODAY, WE HAVE A TINY, PEEPING BABY COCKATIEL!! It is so pitiful looking!! I hope they take good care of it, I want to watch constantly but am trying to be good and leave them alone!
Oh, and not nearly as exciting, but fun, the new baby pearl/wf baby is a hen. So her name is Bubbles. The new boy is Dude. never a dull moment when you let your kids name teh birds!
MsB
I will try to get pics of the baby in the next couple of days!!!

Congrats MsB. How many more of them did you guess were fertile?
Purdy got her 2nd egg this morning right on time. So far she is a pro. She has no problems laying, in fact the first one quite took me by surprize. She goes in and rolls them over a few times a day and she watches the box closely and she hasn't tried to start sitting on them from day one which is good. I don't want to "count my chicks before they hatch" but I'm confident she will be a good mom.
I am almost sure that one more is fertile, and possibly a slim chance a third. But, I don't want to count my bald baby cockatiels before they hatch...LOL.
Yes, CK, arent they precious?
Actually, I have picked the little thing up...keeps getting wood chips and food stuck to his tiny little beak and I have to remove it, make sure they can feed him. So far, he seems to have a full crop and looks great. I just think they are sweet...even naked and just sad looking...lol Steele and Sabrina are being super parents. We will see if we get anther baby tomorrow or it might not be for another couple of days. I was a dork and did not number the eggs! JG, NUMBER YOUR EGGS with a pencil!! Then you write on the calendar and you know what should hatch when...sort of, anyway. A better guess than NO CLUE like me!
