So is a long haired persian the same as a short coat?

Yeah, they look like they ran into a "wall before they were dry"...but I love the look, wish I owned one. I'd do a fair share of braggin' if I did.

Are all Hymalayan's "flat faced?" (poor choice of words, but I don't know the breed.)

Someone I know breeds them too, but the faces are often different, some flat some not and it came to light that she was breeding her hymalayans with her Persians.
Jo, a Himalayan IS a Persian. The term Himalayan simply is a descriptive word for the type of Persian it is. It's like saying you have a red persian or a blue persian...a Himalayan Persian is a Persian that is color pointed and has blue eyes. It is totally acceptable to breed the two together as they are both registered as Persians. They are not two separate breeds as many people think they are.

There are some who choose to only breed Persians and some who choose to only breed Himalayan Persians, but MANY breeders have both in their breeding programs and it is totally acceptable.

Years and years ago, they were considered a separate breed, but they were merged into the Persian category about 40 some years ago.

Oh and btw PM, she IS beautiful!!

To make it easy they can just say a Himi is a long haired siamese with a smashed face. Big Grin LOL

Kinda, sorta, but not really. The short coated persian is actually registered as an Exotic Short Hair (ESH), but is an allowable outcross to the Persian. An ESH is a man made breed like the Himalayan Persian. The Himalayan Persian was created by crossing a Persian with a Siamese which is where the blue eyes and color points come from. The ESH was created by crossing a Persian with a domestic short hair. Of course, all this happened many, many years ago. So an ESH looks just like a persian only it has short hair and is registered as "Exotic"...then there is the Exotic Long Hair...which at this time is the "bastard child" of CFA. The ELH is also registered as an Exotic but is not eligible to be shown. It also is an allowable outcross with the Persian. An ELH looks just like a long haired Persian and to be honest, you can't tell the difference between a Persian and an ELH...at least I can't!

It's rather complicated actually. And I am certainly no expert on the subject so maybe someone else can explain it better than I can. But those are the basics.

CJK,

Actually you did a very good job explaining about the exotic and Exotic Long Hair. The only thing I would change is that no it can't be shown in CFA, but it definitely can be shown in other registries.

HA..I was going to add that but was pressed for time. Yes, The ELH IS recognized in other registries...In my opinion I don't understand what CFAs problem is. I have always felt the ELH has gotten the short end of the stick....

W e l l... I owe the person, not on this forum and apology: I was totally annoyed with her because she bred "persian with Himi's" She never did explain this to me though, and I would have listened to her.

Thanks for the Himi lesson and knowledge, never know when you're gonna need it..LOL
