Put them in thier own class, let whomever breeds them do so, whomever decides not to, that's great, that'll make sure they research thier pedigrees, and leave it to rest. It doesn't matter if we agree or disagree, the fact is people are going to breed them, and since they are, they might as well be able to do so without crap from everyone. I don't care what anyone says, Napoleon is cute for a little dog, and whomever bred him did so conciencously, because dogs like him don't just grow in the garden.
Stone me, rake me over hot coals, go for it, this topic is getting absurd. FWIW, the leading Harle breeder in Danes admitedly breed Merles, and no one gives her crap.
Thanks for your breeze of fresh air in this stagnant situation. Merles in a class alone would make them even more competitive - and the research could continue without all the doom & gloom from the anti-merle side. Excellent idea! Glad your Dane lady can continue on her own without the threat of being strung up by your breed club. How nice! Maggie May
Lady Dane! Furthermore, for those who don't research pedigrees as closely as they should, designate a number that denotes merle heritage on registration papers. That's what was done with the Himi / Persian issue.
Some are here because they hope to make a difference, others like to roll around in the feces. You'll be able to "sniff them out" in no time. -DJ's Doxies,

I don't exactly agree it would make them more competetive. Smaller classes promote fewer dogs defeated to obtain Championship, which would provide added amunition for the opposing side towards merle inferiority.
It's already PROVEN merles can rise to the top when running with the "Big Boys" ie. Specialties. Maggie May
