There's a write up on a couple that got busted by the SPCA for 1000 dogs...the dogs look in good shape too! Worth reading if you already haven't done that.

So the SPCA is now able to "bust breeders". Wonder where & when they were able to become law enforcement. Seems to me that breeders are under attack now. Am I to understand that people don't get a chance to defend themselves anymore ! charly
I'm in Canada Charly and the SPCA here have rights under the Police Act Section 9... This gives them the right to call themselves "Special Constables" which again, is under the police Act "Constable"..
With that power, albeit, abused by them, if your animals, right down to a "pet mouse" are not inside your own house, then they can take any animals:- they don't need a warrant to search or enter locked gates, fences, kennels ect., the only time they need a warrant is to enter the owner's home! But one must keep thier doors closed:- (as there is an Act called "in plain site") so if they see in the house, because you have a door open, then they can act on that and can take the animals they see.
Then they fabricate a ton of information, the judges in Court don't care as the SPCA has it's own prosecutor..they are so broke, but were able to hire a full time Prosecuter!!!
This prosecuter deals strictly in animals, and other lawyers/attorney's do not, so the Judge always takes SPCA's word as gospel as he/she doesn't usually know enough about animals or care enough about the owners to look into the allegations.
Say a breeder has one slightly overweight dog, for example, they can and most likely will take all the dogs/cats/birds..on the premise, that if one is overweight then the other's are not being treated well either!
Most breeder/show people here in Canada, do not have outside kennels. Some of the best in the business with Champions galore, will not take the chance of outside buildings.
Our Humane Society/Animal Control, is left to pick up dead, frozen and mutt like dogs and homeless cats, they do not have any power to speak of.
SPCA only wants the best, they won't bust a kennel or puppymill full of mutts, no money in it for them!
I sure hope the SPCA in the USA doesn't have the same powers, it's like having the Gestopo lurking around.
Sorry to rant on like this, but it makes me so angry especially when the CEO's at SPCA make over 200K a year. Non profit organization, My azzz!!
Just to add to this very long post:- Animal Advocates here have been checking ads re: dogs and cats for sale, they came to the calculation that over 1 Million dollars is changing hands per month..(In Canada) that's a scary thought as somebody/or some organization will want to cash in on that kind of money. So yes, breeder's are in for a hard time!

1000 dogs? That is not being a breeder, that is being a hoarder.
Even with 6 people caring for them. That's an average of 166 dogs per person.
There is no excuse for the place not being properly ventilated for cooling purposes as well as reducing the ammonia. There is also no excuse for not keeping the dogs toenails trimmed, wormed and vaccinated.
Contrary to what apparently is popular belief, animals are not plants, to sit in a cage and be fed and watered. They deserve appropriate *ROUTINE* care.
This happens a lot. And in most cases I believe this to be a sickness. These people menat well, tried to do their best, but there were too many dogs for them to take care of. It heart-breaking to them and for the animals.
I don't see this kind of neglect to be *purposful* in order to abuse the animals or a case of not giving a flying flip about the animals...otherwise, the dogs would be starved as well. It's a classic case of hoarding.
Very sad indeed.

It's really unfortunate how things like this are a double edged sword. They are to protect animals that have no voice, who cannot escape or cry for help. Yet, for puppymills and such, as long as their liscenses are up to date abd they can make proof available, they are allowed to continually exploit animals for profit. SPCA does care about genetics, health screening and temperament.
But there are so many willy nilly breeders out there, it's no suprise. Breeders like me get condemned and accused for being snobs and elitist. Call me that if you like, it is of no consequence to me. I will continue to blast puppymills, backyard breeders and commercial/high volume breeders as long as there is breath in my body.
It is those people who have become the *majority* and therefore what they do has become acceptable to so many. People who continue to make excuses and condone their practices are to blame for the blanketed legislature. Blanketed on everyone....except...the *norm* which are the mills and HVB.

I agree with you on two points.. 1) that is way too many dogs for someone to own, obviously, it was for breeding purposes only!
The other is the blanketed legislation:-unfortunately, here it is abused! Puppymillers/and the like are all set up and have false walls, false doors, dug outs with trailers in them...so the easiest way for SPCA to say they are actually working on the problem is to agravate the heck out of those of us who, register, show, discuss openly, allow people in our homes to see the dogs/pups. Easy pickins' to validate their existence!
They don't care if one has 2 dogs or 1000 dogs, if you're easy to find, look out! I have not had an experience with them as yet, but as they take anoymous calls and act upon them, I have had friends who for years have been hounded by them, once they know you have dogs regardless of how many, they won't go away, healthy or otherwise! The Special Constables have to get their quota of visits to get their paycheque.
Look at how they caught those people with the 1000 dogs..a bad smell in a dry creek bed!!! Just lucky for the dogs, but how many years did that take?
And, SPCA in the USA may care about health screening, genetics and temperament, but they don't here! They sell sick cats and dogs, temperament is just based on whether or not the dog in the cage at the SPCA shelter has biten a worker or not, if not, then out it goes to unsuspecting new owner!

It would seem to me that due process is no longer available for dog breeders & some others. It is down-right frightening when an organization can decide what the law is & then play judge & jury. charly
Charly, you are right this is what makes me so angry. I don't think ANYONE is going to argue 1000 dogs is beyond absurd. But the point is that they can do it for 10 dogs just as well as 1000 if they want to and in some states there is NO due process, NO recourse, NO appeal.
That is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. A SERIAL KILLER AND RAPIST OF CHILDREN HAS MORE RIGHTS THAN A BREEDER - THAT IS JUST PLAIN WRONG!!
