Ok can anyone give me some ideas on how to get my 13yr old cat to not want to beat the crap out of the puppy!! I don't allow the puppy to chase the cats, actually the puppy will just sit with us and watch the cats. I called over my male who is the one there is a issue with and he comes over but hisses at the puppy even when the puppy does nothing...do you think this will change since hes 13? I can't allow them together because my male has razor nails and fang teeth lol. Any ideas please.

I would clip the claws and let him hiss all he wants. Since the puppy is layed back about the cats, it should be easy for the 13 year old cat to retain his alpha status. Let them work it out, only stepping in if/when the cat starts biting. The puppy should realize NOW before getting big, that the cats are boss. Allow them to teach him. It's a little scarey, but nature is best at establishing pecking order. Nine times out of ten, we step in and screw it up.

Hu, When you say clip the claws you mean just clip off the sharp part of them right? You think that with the sharp part gone the cat wont do as much damage to the puppy if he swipes him one? Ive never clipped his nails before, im willing to try it cause he doesnt go out anyways. Thanks for the advice

Yes, the sharp points. The nail bed has a pink part inside the nail called the 'quick'. You can trim up to that point, or it will bleed.
A swipe from a clipped nail will still leave scratches, but much better than deep punctures and rips. Scratches never killed any puppy, but sure taught a few!

Hi, I agree 100% with Hu's suggestion. Your cat is just letting the puppy know that He is boss there and the puppy best better learn quickly.
I did the same with my cat Thunder before I introduced the puppies to him. It took about a week and a few nose swipes before the puppies gave Thunder all the room he wanted. 6 months later, all is well in the house to the point of Thunder playing with the pups and giving up the water dish to them.
Be very careful clipping the nails and make sure to get the back paws to, those are the worst.

Purple Hu is correct clipping the nails also as mya said clip the nails on the back paws as well. and yes every time you do step in will cause the cat to want to fight with your puppy again.
I am sorry miss this topic before I hope what hu suggested helps you new pup with you cat.
the cat could be a lil nift that you have a new pup.
Good point, TW. He is a cute Houndy type mix. Thought to be a puggle, but without protruding eyes.

Thank you all for the great suggestions and info. I am going on vacation so when I get back im going to do the nail clipping. I understand that the scratches will still happen, thats what im afraid of but at the same time the puppy has to learn somehow right. I am afraid that one swipe could get a eye even though they dont stick out like a regular pugs do. Its just another worry lol. I think cutting the cats nails will be worse then allowing the puppy to get smacked around to learn lol!! Thank you all I do appreciate it.

Purple you concerns are valid, however think of your puppy and your cat as kids. There is about as much of a chance that one of the kids could be seriously hurt when they play or fight.
Just step in if it gets to the point that your cat has a good hold and the puppy cannot get away. Otherwise the chances are the puppy with run the second the cat hisses.
Have a wonderful vacation!

To be honest, Purple, you need to clip your cats claws on a regular basis, wihtout the concerns of a puppy. Some do fine, with acceptable and proper scratching surfaces, but many indoor cats will grow nails right into the pads without routine trimmming.
Perhaps you could shop for a good feline set of nail trimmers while on vacation and then have your vet or better yet, local groomer show you the correct technique? I wouldn't think a groomer would charge more than $5.00 to show you how. Will come in handy for the puppy, too!

Hu is right and good idea. Vets and groomers from what I find usually charge the $5 for clipping. Look around, it is worth it to have someone else do it if your cat gives too much trouble.
I have decided that Im going to take the cats to a groomer to do there nails. I dont think I can do it by myself and even with a second person its prob just safer to have a professional do it. So this weekend were off to the groomer lol. Boy oh boy am I going to have some angry cats!!!
