Who is most important?

Some are here because they hope to make a difference, others like to roll around in the feces. You'll be able to "sniff them out" in no time. -DJ's Doxies,

But since the breeder controls placement, the burden of getting dogs into GOOD homes that will also follow through and show them rests on their shoulders. I don't see how anyone could say the breeder didn't ALWAYS come first on any list-it always comes back to the breeder, any way you look at it.

Very true. If it wasn't for the breeder the owner wouldn't have a dog and the judge wouldn't have a dog to judge.

Without a breeder, there would not be a dog to put in the ring.

Without an owner, the dog would never enter the ring. However without the breeder, this dog would never have been available to the owner. (assuming they are not one in the same).

A judge actually has probably been both things in their past. Someone can wake up and want to breed a show dog. Someone can wake up and want to own a show dog. But judges have to have already come from those ranks in order to qualify to be a judge.

I have been a breeder, an owner and a breeder-owner. More recently I started being a judge. Had I not had the years of breeding/owning/finishing Champions, I would never have been able to step into the ring as a judge Smile

I left the question open ended on purpose, to make us THINK!

There is no right or wrong answer. The integrity, knowledge, and dedication are needed from all three in order to truly preserve and improve our chosen breeds.

My personal order would be #1. Breeder. #2. Owner. #3. Judge.
For me it all comes back to the breeder.

When I see exhibitors crowding in to congratulate the owner, I can't help but hope the Breeders phone is ringing! The true pioneers dedicated to thier breeding programs are many times never seen in the showring, but THIER DOGS ARE!

Great breeders are the backbone of the entire sport.

I felt the need to chime in... While normally, and in most circumstances I would say the breeder is important, I must state that BreederS are most importent in the sense that:

We all know breeders who are so severely kennel blind - and all of us I am sure are guilty in varying degrees - we need other breeders who can help clarify our views and educate us.

How about adding a name to this list?

MENTORS! IMO THE most important.

Im on another forum that houses some of the most kennel blind, uneducated breeders out there, who all think the dogs they own/breed are perfect, and who we are NOT ALLOWED to debate or even discuss with because whenever someone disagrees, they run to moderators. How do these people learn??? They dont. Why? No good mentors, or other breeders who DO have a clue to teach them.

So... most important for me? Mentors.

Of those listed? Its hard to place them in an order.... all have importance when breeding. For me however, temperament is foremost.

All are equally important. But first the Bitch and Dog! For without them there is no question to answer.

Without the Judge there is no need to show.
Without the Breeder there is no show potential pup.
Without the Owner there is no one to raise the pup.

But above all with out the animals there is no pups.

1. Breeder
2. Owner
3. Judge

It's a good discussion, and all three play an important part of the process of creating a Champion. It's almost like who came first, the chicken or the egg? You need one to make the other.
