But I think I am going to the Humane Society tomorrow to adopt an older male, grey cockatiel. My hen is so miserable and he's over ten. She's 15 or 16, and barren...so that's it.

I said I wouldn't do it, but I think I am.

Well, I made it through 2 Humane Society places today, St. Paul and Coon Rapids. I ended up bringing home Benson.

He was a late night walk-in surrender so nothing is really known about him. They say he's 4, but I'd expect he's older than that. He's actually pretty good sized and he's banded, although I haven't been able to get near it to see what it says.

His beak was very overgrown, I have never had that with any of my birds, so it was cut...and he looks to have a broken toe.

Def! not hand tame, lol...yet, that is. And if he never is, that is up to him. It's been several hours now, and he's finally moved in his spare room condo to the big cage where my girl is...and now he's chatting me up, quite a bit, like a good boy should.

His tail feathers are a bit ruffled, and his poop is a little loose, so I started him on a now dose antibiotic...just in case.

As I write, he is moving his way down to his feed cups for his first nibble, in the new digs. He enjoys the music in the dog room.

And on another subject!!!!! I was very disaapointed with both facilities. I could NOT believe the adoption prices, not only on the bird, $75...which I could have a fresh, undamaged one from a breeder for. The service was bad...but what drove me crazy!!!! is that the adoption prices on the dogs, they DID have, there were VERY few at each facility were in the 300-350 range. Some were cheaper. I think the cheapest I saw was a 7 year old Lab mix for 199. Well, he's eating.

Shame on them...the HS's that is.

I get $75, sometimes less, for my handfed sweet babies.

I get $50 or less for my retired older, sometimes tame, birds.

And they complain they have to euth so many animals...HELLO?? Stop charging breeder prices for homeless animals!

That infuriates me.

And they were charging 99 for the fancier colored ones, non-greys!

IMO, thats just pet store sales for profit prices, not "homeless in need of your generosity" prices.

Makes me mad.

Next time: craigslist! Big Grin
(or me...hehe)

This little sh!t is a talker, lol...possibly why he was abandoned? He doesn't go forever and hasn't raised his voice. Perhaps it's just the MPR playing next to him that has him all jazzed up, or calmed down. What a range. Neither of my other two boys were THIS vocal. What a honey. I've missed a boy.

We worked on hands a bit today. He got some herbs from the indoor spice garden and I think he liked that...although confused.

He tried being flashy to my female on several occasions. She's interested, but still not feeling so good. I am going to give her a few more days, before they have an official, meet and greet.

And that beak needs trimming again. MsB, if he never had natural beak trimming stones, perches, treats, etc., do you think he will learn to use them, like my others have always done?

Yes, sounds like he is a neat bird and fitting in. Thats great and glad you got your hen a buddy.

Beware...I have a ten year old hen set up with a ten year old cockbird and fully expect babies in a few months...you might be in the same boat if he is as "sassy" as you say. Wink
