Round Four: Cat started salivating something fierce and gagging on the Clavamox. After a few seconds (and a major panic and slight asthma attack from me :rollseyes he stopped and came back purring. My guess is that he got it stuck and the saliva was a response to remove it. The only problem is, I'm not sure if the pill came UP or went DOWN! I gave him the canned cat food, but only fatty Kitty stuffed her face in it, once again. When will he start eating again?! When will he stop showing signs? BTW, he has been slowing down on the urinating attempts. He was going every 2-5 minutes, now he's going about every five to ten minutes. Another thing, can I give him baby aspirin to help with the inflammation? Gram has a pill cutter (I was thinking about cutting it in fourths) and 81mg baby aspirin, so that would be approximately 20mg if I cut it in fourths. Would that be alright for him? He's probably around 10 pounds right now. But, also take into consideration that he's not eating...
Clavamox is a pretty good antibiotic. HE should be showing huge signs of relief after jsut a few pills...
As far as the appetite returning, not sure but i would not fret about that. He'll eat as he is hungry.

Ratt,
Is there a way you can seperate him when feeding? That way the other cat won't get into the food? If you are having problems giving pills, you can always try putting it in something. Now perhaps my cat are just hogs, but I can take a tiny ball of liverwurst, hide the pill and they gulp it down no problems. If he isn't eating, you can try giving him some Nutra-Cal...it is a high calorie supplement which can be used for cats and dogs who are not eating. Also, you need to make sure he is getting enough water. Antibiotics can cause diarreah, which can lead to dehydration. If the cat isn't drinking a lot to begin with, it could exacerbate the dehydration situation. If there isn't much fluid going in, you won't see much coming out and it will be hard to track his progress. If he is not drinking, your vet may have to administer fluids to keep him hydrated. (Depending on your vet, she/he may give you the fluids and have you administer them at specific intervals)
Certainly keep close tabs with your vet and keep him/her up to date on the cats progress. If he gets diarreah, make sure you let the vet know. I would check with the vet before administering any aspirin. It may help with discomfort but it could also mask the signs of him failing to improve. IE he may seem like he is better because the aspirin is making him feel better when he really is not getting "better".
Keep us posted Ratt.

Well, I got Cat to eat something... I piece of Gram's stuffed chicken breast! Lol. I think he's just being picky about the canned food I got. Instead of getting that Special Kitty crap that he likes, I got some other generic crap. He likes the sliced cat food better than the goop cat food, which is what they have now. Either that, or he doesn't like it because I've been adding warm water and making more of a canned kitty food stew with it... Either way, he ate chicken today. I had already given his aspirin tonight, before I read this, so he's had half a baby aspirin altogether now. I wonder if I give him aspirin like every other 'round' (once a day), maybe then he could still be somewhat pain-free or have at least reduced pain, while still being able to monitor his progress...

That is great news Ratt!!!! He must be feeling so much better too.

Hi Rat, I give my girls cranberry capsules and they really help.I buy them in the vitamin dept. at wal-mart. In fact they get then about once a week just for all around good health. I have never tried them with cats but check with your vet. You know me I like the natural approach when possible. Good Luck. MM
Is the cranberry acidic, MM? Were you using it for UTI in dogs? See, I was reading about UTI in cats. The research that they've done shows that DRY food is a big factor. They did research with UTI cats with UTI dry foods, UTI canned foods, regular canned foods and regular dry. The research showed that UTI happened in cats on the UTI dry than the regular canned. It also said that the calcium rocks were occuring a lot more now that the mineral content was reduced and the pH level of the cat food was lowered. They believe that the higher mineral levels and pH may have reduced the calcium levels in the UT, but they're not positive.
UPDATE! Cat seems to be fully recovered now, but he still has two more sets of pills to take. He's pretty pissed that I've been shoving these things down his throat, but after tomorrow, he'll be all done and hopefully this won't occur again!
I know this may sound odd, but I will say it any ways.
Offer your cats Cranberry juice. If they like it give it to them once a week at least. You won't run into problem any more. My animals actually like it. I also give gatoraid under some circumstance. I gave the Rabbit I rescued (from a week in a cage with no food or water and his dead sibling) just gatoraid for the first three days then slowly introduced dry pellets By then end of the first week I had him he was eating regular food and drinking water and offered the gatoraid once every two days for another week. When I got him he was all but dead. Fit in my hand and had a wet bottom and was cold. He was just bones with fur on him. A year later and chomper is fat and happy bunny.
Hope your kitty is feeling better soon.
