I work at an animal shelter. Last night early this morning we arrived to find that a lab mix had given birth to 4 puppies but that she had eaten parts of them. She then had 2 more and cleaned them all up and looked like she was taking care of them but when we checked again, she had multilated one of them and had ate the front leg off of another one. They were still living but we had to put them down. We are now wondering why she would do that and if we should put her down?

Thanks.

That does not sound like "normal" run of the mill behavior. Some mother dogs might do this as nature's way of culling the weak or sickest of the litter that might not survive, and nature's way of them not taking from the healthier pups. But mutilating pups like this that are otherwise healthy sounds like this dog just has some issues that are not exactly normal.

Or not that I have ever heard.

I would think since this was a shelter maybe she was nervous. Did they know she was going to birth? Was she in a quiet setting? IMO many things could of caused this poor animal to act as she did. MM

Some animals just get overly nervous. And some its just not knowing what to do. This could have been her first litter nad she just didn't have all the instincts in place along with being in the shelter with other dogs nearby. I feel bad for her. She must be terrified.

I've heard of mother cats doing it, but I have never heard of a dog doing. I would guess it would be for the reasons of maybe she had no idea what to do with them or there was something wrong with them.

What I have always known is that they know when the pups are not healthy so they eat them and leave the healthy one.

Yep, you are right Julie. I only had that happen one time and it was horrible. Had a momma cat eat 2 of her 5 babies. Vet told me there was somthing wrong with them and momma instinctively knew it.

In the wild, mothers will eat the ones that they know are vulnerable to keep away the predators to protect the healthy ones.

It's totally gross, but it's the survival of the fittest instinct in them.
