I have a Persian girl who seems to have Dandruff? She has all this flaky stuff in her coat and I for the life of me can't figure out how she would have gotten this, none of my other cats have this problem. Has anyone else experienced this with their cats and if so how did you remedy the situation? Is there a shampoo I can use, or a supplement maybe? I don't think it is her diet as all the adults are on the same diet and as I said no one else seems to have this problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

If you don't mind me asking what type of diet do you have her on?

It may not be for her. No two animals are a like.

All my adults are on Iams Kitten dry and Chicken Soup for The Kittens Lovers Soul Dry. She has been on that since she was a kitten, and this problem just recently came to light which is why I don't think it has anything to do with her diet, but I could be wrong I guess? I just wonder if you would treat dandruff in a cat the same way you would in a human by using a dandruff shampoo? She is such a beautiful girl I would hate for this problem to ruin her coat if it can be easily fixed. I just wonder if it is something more serious that I should consult my vet over. I do appreciate any feed back I can get. Below are a couple pictures of her, so everyone can see who we are talking about.

OH! She sure is a lovely colored tortoiseshell.

I wouldn't recommend using human shampoo on a cat. You could probably use Ark Naturals Neem shampoo on her and see how that helps with the dry skin.

Thank you for the compliment on her, she is a lovely girl. I have yet to get any offspring from her, but hopefully she is just a slow bloomer. I will try a natural shampoo on her and hopefully it will help. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hollie I love your kitty ,I was going to say it may be the food that is causing the issue.you might see if you can find a shampoo for animals that can resolve that issue with the Dandruff.

Hollie Dandruff is typically not a serious problem. With cats it can sometimes be an indication that they're not getting enough fat in their diet, which can occur with many generic or low quality foods. You can try switching to a better quality food or even adding a fish oil supplement to your cat's diet to see if the dandruff improves. If the dandruff includes scabs, crusting or itching, or if your cat is not eating or appears particularly lethargic, this can be a sign of a more serious problem and you should take her to your veterinarian. here is a link that may answer you question http://www.holisticat.com/dandruff.html

That is a beautiful cat. Would that be considered a tortie?? I know you said she is a persian, but do persians have tortoise shell coloring as well? I mean is that what you would call it?

As for this condition, it oculd be dandruff or just dander (what causes allergies in people sensitive to cat dander), or it could be mites, skin fungal condition or her diet as Passion Wolf suggested. A vet trip could pinpoint the exact problem but you could start out by supplementing the diet with more fats and see what happens. If that does not work you might want to have a vet check to see if she has mites or some type of fungal condition.

And I agree with whomever said never use human shampoo on a cat (or a dog).

I agree with Luv4GSD. No human shampoos on the kitties. Keeping proper ph is a must. I never had much luck with the Neem and tea tree products.

Cute baby!

Tortoiseshells belong to the parti-color division along with blue-creams, so both terms are correct.

Some are here because they hope to make a difference, others like to roll around in the feces. You'll be able to "sniff them out" in no time. -DJ's Doxies,
