Help please. 2 days ago my dog developed diarrhea. My husband thinks she may have eaten something on their walk. This hasn't affected her appetite until this morning. She isn't vomitting, and there is no blood in the diarrhea. I'm not sure if this will "take its course" or if I should see a vet. A friend recommended an over the counter diarrhea med, Immodium, but I'm reluctant. Any Advice is appreciated. Thank you.

Did it rain there recently? Any chance your dog may have drank puddle water? Is she immunized? Did she get into the Halloween candy (and if there was chocolate, go speedily to the vet)? Were any new stressors introduced into her life? Is she a highstrung breed - and, if so, did you have a ton of trick or treaters? If stressors or changes were involved recently, she may have devloped coccidia, which = a trip to the vet.

No blood in the stools is good. Is she eating well or off her food? Does she have her normal energy level or is she kind of washed out? Is her nose cold? For the diarrhea, try some canned pumpkin - a spoonful or two mixed in with her food today/tomorrow. You see your dog daily and, thus, know your dog and whether she is 'off' enough to rush her to the vet. If you choose to try the pumpkin and get no results after a day, visit your vet. Best wishes for your future.

Has her diet changed at all, or has she gotten into something in the trash or similar?

A food change will cause diarreah, among other things. But easiest route is process of elimination first. If a food change, I woudln't worry that is probably the culprit. If not, and if it does not abate, a trip to the vet is in order.

What could definitely help is a Probiotic. Ask your vet and good luck Smile

Smile Nope, now that I think of it, I forgot to ask if they'd had their carpets cleaned lately.

I would take her off food for a while and add pedilite or gatorade to her water. When in doubt call the vet. MM

Psst to Pixie - owner says her appetite has not changed above. Meanwhile, I did forget to think of giardia.

Thank you all for the quick responses and advice. I just remember that about a week ago I put a flee treatment on her - Biospot for dogs. I wonder if that could have something to do with this. She didn't get into any candy; we had no trick or treaters at all. I don't believe she drank puddle water, but she could've eaten something at the play ground. Cats use the sandbox as a litter box, and she had a bad habit of eating cat poop if I don't keep her away from it.

You need to keep her away from the sandbox. Ask your vet, but I believe sand can clog up her intestinal tract. If combined with fur, it can create a blockage.

Since the weather is past sandbox play, it might be a good idea to cover it up for the winter.
