In geek terms, you might be surprised how much someone can find out about YOU thru your IP address.

Not sure how this person got the Internet 101, but in fact, 99% of dial up ISP's do infact rotate the IP's. When you dial up, your computer is assigned a IP address out of a pool, you can serve many people out of one class C (or Cpool) at a time. DSL or Cable however may be a different story, some providers assign STATIC ip's or have a long life lease on them, but beaware at any given time, they can renew the IP with a different one. As far as the info gained from a IP address. A IP address does not store any information other then its number and corresponding name (or reverse). This number can be traced back to the owner or provider but thats about it. However, if someone where to "scan" your IP while it is being used by you, they can gain info about the computer's operating system and nothing more unless they actually access your system. In todays age, with the internet growing at a rapid rate, people need to be educated about the internet and we need to get rid of these false rumors. Some people actually get scared of the internet and choose not to use it, its a wondeful tool and should not be feared.

Well, you don't know what you are talking about either!! I can change my isp anytime I want and my gateway and anything else I want and it makes no difference. I could use your isp if I wanted to. Get real, mac man--you don't have a clue!

Mac attack---I agree with isp man, but heck, I wouldn't own a mac if you paid me---gee, i wonder why? can anyone say APPLE????????
Looks like you've been digging in the archives, mac guy. No matter, but on my dial up, I am assigned an ip address. there are actually two numbers that I have to use, a primary and a secondary. Now if my pc goes down or gets a virus and I have to put all that stuff back in, then I still have to use the same primary and secondary numbers. I'm not sure I understand what you mean by my pc being assigned a ip from a pool??? Are you using one of those disks for your internet, like AOL or something? I did ask my server about my ip address and they said it had to always be the same one they gave me. Now I don't know if that means that every person on their dial up service has the same address or if each of us has a different one. Did I misunderstand your post?
ISPboy-you get a clue.. you can change ISP's anytime you want, that wasnt my point. Bye bye
Billy boy, if you knew anything about bill gates, you would know as a younger person, he promoted apple as a company and used a mac everyday. So good bye to you!
Yippy, the numbers you seem to be talking about are your DNS numbers, alot of ISP's have you assign them to your dialup/network settings so you can actually navigate with your computer. IP addresses are usually automatically assigned and you dont see them unless you look for them. I dont use a disk from my ISP because I am the ISP.

So mac guy, you are saying that you are the internet service provider, is that right? For what area? Our server is sbc.global.com . Is that how yours is too? If you are a server, I'd be interested in asking you a couple of questions about my internet, if you don't mind.
Mac Guy, are you the dial up server for your area?
I have dsl on my internet. I put in the ip address and the subnet mask and the default gateway and then the preferred dns server and the alternate dns server. I had to get those numbers from my provider.

You stated you were the isp., so you just outright lied because you think you know more than everyone else? When someone asked you, you said you worked for several and you weren't the provider----why did you feel the need to deceive?
One more thing, why don't you go and ask Bill Gates how he feels about Apple computers or shall we say, mac computers. You will get a surprising answer!!
Well Mr Grant, in my original post, you should note that I used words like "most" and "some". These are called CYA words, cover your ass. This now releases me from any sort of assumption.
I am just simply helping people out, not giving them a hard time. If you want to depate me about computers, start a new thread.. your choice on topics.

I suggest you reread any of my posts, because I am not so sure you are reading correctly or perhaps reading at all. I am not saying I am smarter then anyone, but for anyone who would like to step to the plate, I would be more then willing to discuss a topic anytime.
I am sure good ol billy boy has lots to say about Mr Jobs or Apple... but the funny thing is, before he stole winblows.. he promoted and worked with Apple

Hey now, First off, I just asked you a question and secondly, I was giving you information because I use the dsl. Why are you being defensive towards me? I wasn't against you.

Your point ISPMAN? just learned how to quote someone? Congrats!

The mac guy is just a wanna be. he knows nothing. Answers nobody's questions. avoids everything. lies his ass off and is on here all day, so he obviously is unemployed!! he's full of crapp and that's the bottom line. the only ones who pay any attention to him know better now. his real name is lst, should be lsd!!
When any of you have anything intelligent to say, drop me a line. But when you are prepared to say it, make sure you have knowledge to back you up, or balls to sign in with a real user name.
until then, you know you are bottom feeders
