I bought a domain at Geocities - Now what do I do? Can I just go in and try to make it a Web Page? Then there's subdomains and whether I want to use my domain name or my URL?????? And managing my files - What files?

If you bought the domain thru geocities, I bet they have one heck of a help section. I am not familiar with their setup, but usually once you buy a domain, then you find a cheap place to host it, design your site and call it a day.

Yeah, they have a help system - and it appears pretty good - the hosting and stuff they do. It just seems that I need a dictionary to translate 'computer' into English. I'm real good at directions, but I'm not real confident in my ability to translate what they're telling me to do into what I should do. Can I just go in there and 'play around' and not screw things up? I'm good at 'playing' but if I make a mistake I don't want to do damage.

Yes, you can go in and play all you want. It doesn't get to be an actual website online until you publish it. Check and see if they have live support or a phone # you can call---sometimes it's easier if they can talk/walk you thru it. I'm not familar with the geocities either, but lots of websites have a little sample program you can play thru and that's how you learn to set it up. Good Luck!!

Another thought: Practice on one of their free websites they offer online until you "learn" and then use the one you paid for. Maybe contact the web hosting company and they can help out too.

OOPS!! I just reread that and you said you bought the domain -- so that doesn't mean website.
I bought the domain - if I ask 'search' to find it I get a page that says it is 'under construction'. I downloaded Page Builder - I sent them a few questions about what to do next. Right now I can't get the building site to come up - it keeps asking me to download it - but I did and it is there. I feel like I'm in Kindergarten trying to make sense of the alphabet.

I set up the whole thing with 'Yahoo! SiteBuilder' because it said it was easy - and it is - but you have to have a 'web hosting site' - some of their programs are restricted that way, but this one wasn't. When I got done, it wouldn't 'upload' or 'publish' or whatever it's called. Took most of last evening to figure out why [that I had the wrong kind of site]. I can't transfer from 'SiteBuilder' to 'PageBuilder' so I have to do it all again - and 'PageBuilder' isn't near as easy.

Do they offer any kind of help or support, online or email help with those programs? Just a thought. I've never done a website. I hope you get it all figured out. I think the first one (with anything) is always the toughest.
They offer an online chat room for help - to put it mildly - they didn't help. I'll be going back over there - I was hoping to have it up and running by tomorrow - I still might make it...maybe.

I made my website through Register.com . It was pretty easy after I messed around a little bit and got the hang of it. They will help you get a name for your website and register it and build the website. And the price was pretty decent too. But then attaching it to a search engine was another story... I haven't figured out how to do that.

Geocities is supposed to do all that [I think] - I may just go in and ask to update or upgrade or whatever it 's called to a web hosting site - Just seems that one of those is a lot bigger than I need at this time. $3.00 a month isn't that much difference.

Great start Mimi....Someone just bought me a domain yesterday...I have no idea what to do with it...LOL Shes trying to help me out with it but im clueless. I already have a webpage (with a long URL address) with tripod.
Anyone have any ideas of what I should be doing with this domain name?? I dont think I can use it with tripod...Do I have to start rebuilding my site all over through another free webserver? I do have aol with free webspace if needed.
I bought mine through Yahoo.Geocities. I bought their 'Pro Plan' - about $9. a month - they have a 'PageBuilder' that worked pretty well once I figured it out - but their 'SiteBuilder' only works with a 'web Hosting site' - what ever that is - doesn't say that in the list of tools [it does on some of them]. I haven't figured out how to get pictures on there - and all the info I have to type in because I can't figure out how to upload my files and then work on them. From what everyone has said I should be able to, but I haven't figured that out yet - Right now I'm happy that my links work.
Other than that - I haven't the foggiest clue - mac guy, Pc person, Je m'appelle, LindaK and a couple of others have been helping me on this Board - And have been more help that the help site at Yahoo.
