I received a letter from my cable company (I have a cable modem) saying that my account was used for port scanning. I spoke with my cable company and according to them a complaint can be filed against my account because an email (mass email) was received from my email address? Could someone please give me an idea as to how someone could find out my email address and hack into my computer?? I really never receive junk mail and don't understand how someone could get my email address.
Port Scanning basically happens to anyone who has an email. Advertisers use it and just wait for a response. No one is necessarily trying to hack into your computer. If you order anything online or sign up for a free email account or just sign up for anything or register anything online, then you will get port scanning. I just call it spam and block and delete. That's about all I know about it. If there is more, maybe someone else will post it.
1) if you are using any type of broadband connection, then I would strongly suggest going down to Best Buy or major computer store and buy a router. These devices could be found for under $50. This will do many things, but over all will protect you(your computer)from any outside port scanning.
2)This cable company sounds a bit confused, if I port scan someone, I am looking for open ways to gain access to someones computer. However, a mass email is differnt as SPAM is mass email.
Now something grabs my attention here, and that is the fact that your computer may be doing both, it may be port scanning other computers and sending mass amounts of email. This would be caused by a virus, at this point you may be saying that you have a virus program, but please trust me when I say they are not 100% effective.
If your problem is not fixed, I would strongly suugest making sure your windows box is 100% up to date and then go do a free online virus scan even if you already have a program installed.
Go HERE and click scan now, allow it to do its course and make sure your 100% clean.

I guess it would be better to say that in order to fight a crime, one must know how it is committed first. But if you so wish to make those assumptions about me...then so be it...

I thought with a name like PC Guy, that you would have some computer knowledge to back you up. Then you picked a line out of my statement and turned it around. By reading carefully, you would have noticed the "If" in the beginning of my sentence, and that making it a decesion or a alternative if you will.
Similar to "If I had a alot of money" which is commonly said by people who are not in that position.
So if you want to pick.. let the games begin.

I wasn't picking, but I did notice you DIDN'T answer my question. Guess I got the answer. Don't assume or presume to know anything about me, little mac guy. I have more pc knowledge than I will ever indulge upon you. "If", is such a big word for such a small mind, boy! Don't bother with your silly games, cuz you will NEVER win!! haha

Technically, pc guy---this means he DOES port scan someone. And for mac guy--NOBODY is dumb enough to clik on your link. People don't clik on links from here for OBVIOUS reasons. However,if that link is a virus that you posted, you will be held liable for your auctions.

Okay Smarty person--go click on his link up there and see just how helpful it is---do it and I bet we never hear from you again because you're computer will be crashed!! But go ahead--Prove me wrong here.
It's not a virus. Of course I had to try it out. hehe It was funny to me. I get these kinds of things all the time from my email pals. Got any more mac guy? I like them, maybe I'm warped? I like to use them to annoy my friends, but then we are always playing practical jokes on each other. Doesn't anyone ever joke around on this talk forum anymore?
