My computer after a few months of not being used, completely unattached and everything, crashed, I THINK. I took it to the computer place near me to have the hard drive formatted ( this was before this insident ) when I got it back I plugged it in, it started turning on then all of a sudden it made a weird noise and a loud pop occurred. you could smell just a temporary smell of smoke then it was done. I am going to complain the computer place because I really dont see how it could have been my fault at all. Does it sound like its done, its fried? Im heartbroken.... I wanted it to be my school computer.. now its gone Frown

A lot probably depends on exactly what burned - it may have been just an isolated connection.

Sounds like your motherboard is dead. Or you had a your main power supply have a surge. Which can be caused by a brown out. And before you took it to the Computer Company what was the problem.

There was NO PROBLEM, sorry typo in the top one.

How much would it cost if the main power supply had a surge, or if the motherhood board was dead? How much would it cost to fix? Or is that unfixable?

Could I blame the computer place for messing it up, or probably not? I really dont have the money to have these kind of problems, I barely had the $50 to get the hard drive formatted.

Susie, you are a college student right ? When my child was attending college the University had a program where people could donate old computers and they would be refurbished and donated to students who needed one. Please check with your University I am sure there must be a similar program in your area.

There is really no reason to take your pc in every year and have the hard drive formatted. When your hard drive is formatted, then everything is erased off of your pc (or is it really?) and then all the programs put back in.
That is an unnecessary expense. You can do it yourself if you feel that is necessary for some reason.
You can also delete all the garbage out of your pc, all the history, all the cookies, and defrag on a regular basis and there would be no reason to have the hard drive formatted.
Normally the only people who do that are people who "think" they can erase incriminating files from their pc's. Of course anytime a hard drive is formatted, there is a record kept of it, just so you know.
I'm not saying you have anything incriminating on your pc, I'm just saying you could save money by not having it done.
And as for blaming the pc company, doubtful. They didn't take your pc apart.
If you want to format your hard drive, all you do is use C:\format and it will erase your hard drive. Then you will have to put back in all of your programs, drivers, os, etc.

Susie - Are you having it formatted or defragmented? Do you have to reinstall everything or is everything still there and it just runs faster?

nothing is really there except the basic ( windows 98 which I have, my email outlook express I used to have, and anything that was on my computer when I got it, everything else that I downloaded, pictures, music, ect, is not on it ) Not disdefragmentor Smile I do that myself once a week just to keep it running fast for awhile. Im very impatient for things so my computer has to run fast or I get frusturated, now it doesnt work so Im pretty p-o-ed.

I couldn't take mine down to empty - I have too much on it that I need. I just use the power defragmenter to clean everything up - a couple of the people on here helped me do it because the built-in program doesn't work.
