Oh. Well. I guess I'd better. It still isn't showing anything on that little % bar. And it is getting a little faster - even though it's four years old it's faster now than most of the ones around here.
If I don't count the 7 hours I ran it without the monitor on, I'm right around 30 hours. It still makes noises and the green light still flickers, and it is still building that little wall. But it still shows 0% completed.

AMPUGS: Are you defragging when you are on the computer? You should not be on! You should run it until it stops and then get back on, that will make it go longer if you are on!!

What I'm doing is leaving it to defragg while I'm at work or asleep. I did turn the monitor off the one time because it can be seen from the outside. Now I am just leaving it on. Since it has never been defragged in 4 years I figure it may take a while.

LindaK - So far. I don't know if it is actually doing anything other than making noises. The % bar stays at 0, and if I ask for details the screen is blank. My daughter says she never did it because we don't even have half the drive used. It is out of free help - if I ask Dell it will cost $30. per question.

When you are defragging you have to leave at least the tower on,I do believe you can turn your monitor off seeing the tower is the only 1 doing the work, how long did you let it run before you looked at it and it was showing 0 %?Before you decided to defrag it did you clean the "c drive" which that will take care of all files that are old and internet files that are old ,that will only take a few minutes. We do ours once a mth.

Somethings wrong there Mimi. It shouldn't take more than a couple of hours. You are probably running with errors. You'll need to take care of that first or it won't defrag. Have you ever done a disc scan? Once you get the hang of this you really should clear your cache, disc scan and defrag once a week. Let me know if you need some help with that.
LindaK - As far as I know, it has never been defragged and has never had the disk clean-up or any of those programs run. All I ever used was Word, Excel, HP Publisher's Gold, MSPaint, and Solitaire. It was never on the internet until the last week in May. The graph shows about 1/3 of the hard drive in use. Marie92000h was helping me try to get a new virus program into it and suggested defragging. I've had it runnung about 36 hours total - the % hasn't changed, the little bar box stays empty. No error message comes up for that. It won't let me uninstall McAfee Viruscan 4.0 - I do get an error message for that. Basically this computer works OK and doesn't usually give me any problems. I couldn't get an email to paste into a post, but I was probably doing something wrong - in hindsight I should have let it go at that - I won't get drawn in again - I usually do pretty well at ignoring bashing.
I am usually pretty good at following directions when I have them. This computer is out of its free support period - any questions I have for Dell cost $30. each. I can't find anything in the pile of books that came with it, but I may not know what to look for.

It was Key and she/he has disappeared so it really makes no difference who suggested it. Marie9200h has been helping a lot. It isn't going right - at least I don't think it is. Is there a way to run a diagnostic on this - not sure if that is what it is still called?

Okay Mimi.. then the first thing you need to do is a good disc scan. go to START> PROGRAMS> ACCESSORIES> SYSTEM TOOLS> DISC SCAN> then select C: DRIVE and thorough scan and hit the OK or START button. It's gonna take awhile so do it when you don't plan to be on for awhile. The thing is, if you are running with errors a lot of your other program aren't going work properly, so you need to clean up first. Do that then we can tackle the other stuff
One thing I did do just now - I uninstalled McAfee 4.0 and installed McAfee 7.02 w/firewall [not that I know what a firewall is] with all the crap going on here I was getting a little spooky of coming on here without the updated version. It scanned all my files and found no viruses. If I don't have to be here for the disk scan, I can do it while I'm at work. If I should be here, I can do it either now or when I get home tonight - I'll have at least 3 hours tonight. [Takes a while to unwind after work. That's why I'm usually on here late at night.] I have about 1 1/2 hours now.

The firewall will just prevent certain cookies from getting on your computer and that just means that some of the sites online might not open properly unless you allow the cookies. no biggie. Good to use a firewall, all the time.
now won't you please tell everyone that you simply made a mistake when you "thought" key asked for your password. You and I both know that never happened. She never did any harm to you or anyone else. Her only crime was playing with the trolls and then staying out of the mess. No reason to slander her good name, was there? Even in anger, I don't lie. Thank you.
