I listened to a talk show on the Christian radio station a couple of days ago. They were talking about the Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of Christ." Until then, I had not really heard too much about this movie.
I've heard some wonderful things about his movie. Apparently it will be in Arabic and Hebrew? But the English will be on the screen to make the movie easier to follow. Mel Gibson did a few private screenings of the movie, before the final touches were added. He invited several Christian leaders and asked their opinion and suggestions.
Several said it would be easier to follow if the English were on the screen. A few other suggestions were made, and the result is what we will see when this movie comes out next week.
A few interesting facts......... .Mel Gibson has spoken openly about his recent re conversion, (I guess is how you would say it) To the Catholic faith. He was raised Catholic, but fell a way for many years and recently returned to the church. While the movie was being filmed Mel Gibson went to Mass every day. He has really put forth the effort to produce a movie which I strongly feel will impact everyone who will make an effort to see this film.
It was said that he himself paid for this movie to the tune of 20 million dollars. I imagine he will recoup that the first week the movie is out.
My husband and I plan to see this movie, but I don't know if I will be able to sit through the crucifixion. The movie is rated R for the violence..........the way the crucifixion is portrayed. I have seen several portrayals of the crucifixion of Christ and it is always so painful for me. One of the best portrayals was at a movie shown at the Mormon visitors center in Salt Lake City Utah. Very moving. I hope many people will go see this movie and I hope they will take or encourage their older children (teenagers) to see this movie also.
Actually he spent 30 million dollars (but whose counting when your sexy Mel Gibson?) and I think that even though it sounds like it may be tough watching it with the subtext, it truly will give a very accurate historical rendition of how it was.

I have heard this already but I have not heard anyone explain how it does this...an "R" rated movie full of violence. I do not doubt that one can learn something from it but I would like to hear from you, Rose, what you think it is...THANX

It definately has alot of violence - he was crucified! It makes the movie "Jesus Of Nazareth" look like a Disney Film - it sounds like I'm being flip but I'm not - I haven't ever walked out of a theater the way I walked out of one last night. I just got off the phone with my aunt - she says she won't be seeing the movie because she just couldn't take it. Well, I can respect her opinion, but think of it this way - we are watching a movie for two and a half hours, Jesus lived it. Lived it for us. If you want to feel humbled and then joyful knowing that even if you were the only person in the entire world, Jesus still would have gone through this for you - go see the movie.

The movie is sold out for three weeks here so we have to wait to see it. I have heard that it is very moving and makes you rethink your whole life concept. I think that people should see it even with the violent scenes. It truly portrays the way that it happened.
After watching the news and listening to people who have seen the movie..............not to mention reading the reviews, I have decided I simply can't go to this movie because of the graphic portrayal of the crucifixion.
I must leave the room when my husband is watching any violent television shows. When I was little I would run and hide behind my father. I thought I would be able to see this movie, but I realize now that there is no way.
For those that can handle the graphic violence of the crucifixion, then I would recommend seeing this movie. It is my belief that those who do go will come out of the theater with a whole new outlook on the sacrifice of the Savior.
It is very moving to stop and realize Christ sacrificed himself for us, to atone for every sin that every human being has ever made or will make in their lifetime. The most wonderful thing that has come to us through the sacrifice of the Savior, is the resurrection. We are all guaranteed we will live eternally. Life does not end with our death in mortality. It goes on. We are all guaranteed we will be resurrected. ( And if it is our desire, with faith and good works, we will be with our loved ones again. )
Rose, I have a theory. Perhaps our heavenly Father was working thru Mel Gibson to produce this movie in order to give the world a wake up call. No matter how good of a Christian a person may think themselves to be, none of us are as good as we think we are when compared to Christ. I honestly think seeing the suffering/horrors/violence/etc. of this movie would give a person a much deeper understanding of just what Jesus went thru to save us from our sins. To read it in the Bible and hear about it in church, really doesn't do our Savior justice. To actually witness it in a movie would be almost like being there. Seeing the movie may even help to reinstill one's faith, should it be lacking. The Lord truly does work in mysterious ways. The heart-wrenching is something one will always remember and maybe enable some people to think twice about how they are living their lives. WWJD?
Sally, I couldn't have said it better myself. The violence will make you cry, cringe and it will also give you that deeper appreciation for what He did for us. And I do believe God worked through Mel Gibson.

I certainly don't need to watch a portrayal of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, to understand the magnitude of what Christ did for me.
I've read about it in the Bible, I've heard about it through church clergy. On Sunday when I go to church I ponder the very subject when I take the sacrament. I have even given talks on the subject.
I was seriously comtemplating seeing the film, however I have changed my mind after hearing several reviews regarding the violence.
I am sure many are going just out of curiosity. That really is not a good reason to go, but if it brings these people closer to Christ or brings them to Christ, then it is a good thing.
Rose, I will never sit down and talk to you about animals. Christ is a different story. I felt the same way you did - didn't need to see the violence to know, but was going to see it anyway. If you see the movie, being a Christian as you say you are, you will never be the same again. A humbler person you will be - I know I am.
