A hundred thousand elephants,
A hundred thousand horses,
A hundred thousand mule-drawn chariots,
Are not worth a sixteenth part
Of a single step forward.

All beings tremble before violence.
All fear death.
All love life.

See yourself in others.
Then whom can you hurt?
What harm can you do?

It is not by the amount that giving is productive of reward but rather by the generous impulse behind it.

Therefore even so little as a handful of rice flour given with a pure heart becomes something that will bring great reward.

All that we are is the result of our thoughts; it is founded on our thoughts and made up of our thoughts. With our thoughts we make the world. If you speak or act with a harmful thought, trouble will follow you as the wheel follows the ox that draws the cart.

..If you speak or act with a harmonious thought, happiness will follow you as your own shadow, never leaving you.

It is good to control your words and thoughts. The seeker who is in control feels free and joyful. Listen to that speaker who guards his tongue and speaks wisely. Such a one is humble and does not exalt himself.

"When you practice generosity, Subhuti, you should not rely on any object to be the cause of your generosity. You should not rely on words, for they are merely labels. If you practice generosity without relying on causes or labels, you cannot conceive of the happiness."

"Subhuti, do you think that the space in the east can be measured?"

"No, Honored One."

"Can the space in the west, the north, or the south, or up above or down below be measured?"

"No, Honored One."

"In the same way, Subhuti, if you do not rely on any concept when practicing generosity, the happiness that results is as immeasurable as space."

-Diamond Sutra

"You tell me to stand still, but I am not walking," he shouted, "whereas you who are walking say you are still."

"How is it that you are standing still but I am not?"

The Buddha turned round...

"My legs move but my mind is still," he said.

"Your legs are still but your mind moves all the time in a fire of anger, hatred, and feverish desire. Therefore, I am still but you are not."

Do not disregard the accumulation of goodness, saying, 'This will come to nothing.' By the gradual falling of raindrops, a jar is filled.

Pay no attention to the faults of others,
things done or left undone by others.

Consider only what by oneself is done or left undone.

Try to be reasonable in the way you grow, and don't ever think it is too late. It is never too late. Even if you are going to die tomorrow, keep yourself straight and clear and be a happy human being today. If you keep your situation happy day by day, you will eventually reach the greatest happiness of enlightenment.

If you want to change the world, first try to improve and bring about change within yourself. That will help change your family. From there it just gets bigger and bigger. Everything we do has some effect, some impact.

On Hate

"Do visitors come to your house, good Brahmin?"

"Yes," he replied.

"What do yu do when they come?"

"Oh, we prepare a sumptuous feast."

"What do you if they refuse to receive the meal?"

"Why, we gladly partake of the meal ourselves."

"Well, good Brahmin, you have invited me for alms and entertained me with abuse which I decline to accept......

So now the abuse belongs to you."

If we are peaceful, if we are happy, we can smile and blossom like a flower, and everyone in our family, our entire society, will benefit from our peace.

I say there is no wicked deed that may not be committed by...the human being who has transgressed in one thing.

What one thing?

I mean, the intentional uttering of a falsehood.

If you want to know the past, to know what has caused you, look at yourself in the present, for that is the past’s effect.

If you want to know your future, then look at yourself in the present, for that is the cause of the future.

Hey K9 Smile Forgot to tell you: one of our earlier family sailboats, a Herreshoff cat, was named "Wu Wei" by Dad years ago. He thought it was a hoot - naming a sailboat after the art on 'non-doing.' Of course, some of the folks around here thought he'd spelled "Woo wee" wrong. LOL
