Try as I might, I can never get homemade scalloped potatoes to come out right.
Can anyone help?
I used the recipe from a cookbook that uses the flour, butter, salt, pepper, onion, and milk and you bake them in the oven. But they never have that good scalloped potato flavor I'm craving.
I've made them three times and they all turn out the same. Am I forgetting something?
Gosh Doc, I am not sure. I have never made them. I usually just make them out of the box! They aren't as good as homemade scalloped potatoes, but they work for me! Good luck, hopefully someone on here will have some answers for you.
The only answer I have is. Call Grandma or mom?? Thats what I do, I can't get it to taste just right either. The last time I made it and it came close, I used a slow cooker. Layered the potatoes, flour, a bit of butter on each layer salt &pepper, milk, sprinkle in some ham. Then start the process over until the pot is full.
How thick are you slicing the potatoes? What temp are you using? How long are you baking them? These are all things that affect both the texture and flavor of scalloped potatoes.
The only dumb question is the one that goes UNASKED!!!!

got any advice for me?
I guess this is so frustrating to me because it's such a simple dish and it just doesn't come out right for me. I can cook almost anything even things I don't eat, but cook for others and they like them fine and they come out okay. (I need to tell mr. potato head to stop sticking me with those voodoo pins..hahaha!!)

Thanks Lab. All I ever get to come out right are the boxed ones and I nuke them. LOL

LOL Thanks Dals. I did call Mom and she said that was how she always made them. Maybe I'm just jinxed in the potato dept. haha!!
Do you have the crockpot recipe for the scalloped potatoes or a link for the recipe? I looked online, but the only ones I found, have cheese in them. I don't mind the cheese, but I'd rather try and get the regular scalloped potatoes to work first.
Sorry Doc, the only receipes we share in my family are verbal ones. LOL. And nothing is really measured, expcially stuff like that. LOl. Depending on how big your crock pot is and how full it is depends on how long its in the crock pot. My mom would usually start it about noon then by the time it was dinner time at about 7 it was ready. The first time I made them I had to make it in the oven. I made it the same way (potatoes, flour, bit of butter, s&p, milk) then put in the oven at 350 and let it bake until the top was all bubbly. Usually took about an hour. Man Doc now you have me wanting scalloped potatoes. LOL
This isnt really HOME made or anything, but its pretty dang good... its made in the crockpot.
8-10 sliced potatoes 1 onion, chopped 5-6 slices bacon ( uncooked ) cut in 1/3 ( the bacon gives it the best flavoring in the world ) 1 packet country style gravy mix 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 1/2- 2 cups water ( never tried it with milk but Im sure it would work ) and some chedda cheese
Combine potatoes, onions, and bacon in lightly greased crock pot, combine gravy mix, mushroom soup and water in seperate bowl, mix. Slowly pour gravy mixture over potatoes cover and cook on low for 5-7 hours or on high for 3-4 hours. Top with the cheese for the last 30 minutes
if its a little runny, then just shove it in the oven for a half hour instead of keeping it in there for the last half hour...
